(Heads up, I love Kishi but this constructive criticism is more than necessary & you know it)
Okay, biggest criticism of the war arc- not enough people are dying, straight off the bat. Everybody knows this and it's painfully obvious. So far we have a few hundred nameless ninja, Intel Division and Neji Hyuuga. That's a whole war. A whole deadly war where the stakes should've been higher than ever- yet the Pain Invasion Arc, the Sasuke Retrieval Mission and the Destruction of the Leaf have all been more intense and actually had more significant deaths. So, why is this lack of death so fundamentally bad to the story?
Kishimoto is like an overly-protective parent. It's just....why is he keeping so many people alive? Okay, maybe not Shikamaru, or Sasuke, or Naruto. Fair enough. BUT WHAT MORE DOES KITSUCHI HAVE TO ADD TO THE PLOT!? Kitsuchi, Shino, Mifune, the 5 Kage, Karui, Guy, Killer Bee, Sai, Tenten, Shizune, the Inuzuka clan, the Sarutobi clan...will these guys really add anything huge to the plot in the near future?
The thing is, he's actually been doing this for a while. Yamato? We never found out. Anko? No idea. Obito? Survived. Madara. Faked his death. Kabuto? Comatose. Kakashi?!?!?!?! Take a risk Kishimoto, Neji's death alone was random and out of place. If people started generally dropping every chapter (even if only shown dead in one panel) the stakes immediately get SO MUCH HIGHER. We remember Neji well because of his death! When a character dies they leave a lasting impression on the audience and become more memorable. Not only has the lack of death nullified the battle stakes but it has also made Neji's death seemingly redundant. And that makes me sad.
