Alright, so in chapter 423, we saw Kakashi lay a chain trap by going underground, then having chouji and his fatass dad rip the chains up to immobilize Pein, giving him an opening to form a raikiri.
At this point, Pein's other body (that Chouji's dad had crushed in the end of the previous manga) jumps up to block Kakashi's attack, giving the other body time to blast them all away with his gravity jutsu. Kakashi is left helpless in a pile of rubbel.
Now, I'd like to bring some things to everyone's attention:
1. Why would Kakashi assume that demon realm was dead? Fukusaku relayed all of the information from Jiraiya's battle to Konoha, obviously. All of Pein's "dead" bodies randomly came back to life after Jiraiya had used a genjutsu on them, and stabbed them. Why, then, was Kakashi supposedly not expecting demon realm to spring back to life?
In a seemingly unrelated fight other than the Jiraiya/Pein one, something similar happens: In the Chiyo+Sakura vs. Sasori fight, Chiyo kills Sasori by stabbing him with two old puppets, seemingly thrown away due to blunted blades earlier in the fight.
An experienced ninja like Kakashi would be expecting something like this, and the fact that he knew from Fukusaku that this could possibly happen is just a plus for Kakashi.
2. Check out the top panel in this page of the manga.
Kakashi thinks "We were too late?" That definitely proves Kakashi's got something else up his sleeve, something we weren't shown earlier. He most likely layed another trap for Pein, knowing his dead body would spring back to life. However, it seems like a risky plan if he's questioning if it worked or not. Assuming it's something separate from their already tried plan, it'll work out; Kishi wouldn't mention a failed, secret plan.
