The Kages' power over their respective villages.

So i was discussing with a member of another Naruto forum the Kages' power over their respective villages, me defending it was a democracy and he defended it was a dictatorship. When i asked him why he thought like that he answered with the following quote:

Some people should learn about Feudal Japan on which this entire setting is built, this isn't America where a few people can force their way around, in those days what the leader said was the absolute law and the stupid moron that stood against it was deadmeat unless he had a army at his beckons to pose a challenge. This isn't supposed to be a Democracy, but a Military Dictatorship, I get Sarutobi was a pacifist that went too easy on the Village but too many of those dumb ideas that the civilians could just run him over is entirely too stupid. Heck the two Elders, his old team mates the only two members of the so called Council officially, are pretty much nothing but advisers.

So this made me think, how much political power do the Kage actually have in his own village?

And so here i am, since Narutobase is the most popular forum i frequent i decided to try asking it here were lot of people might answer

The advisors seemed to have some power over Hiruzen. After all, the advisor and Danzo were the ones who wanted the Uchiha massacre to happen, and even though Hiruzen agreed in the end, it was because they pressured him.

Trollkage is the only name that comes to mind.

Depends on the kage and the village.

For ex. Tobirama's persona and his power over people is different; he was not ineffective as Hiruzen who could not get a grip.

They have advisors but can choose to ignore them Case in point Tsunade kicking out her advisors and bring in Naruto

It looks like it depends on the village and Kage.

Never seen a villager from Konoha hate his or her Hokage, but im not too sure about the other villages.

Though Suna and Gaara look like a unit here, they love and appreciate him, so im short on knowledge when it come to anything other than Konohagakure, and Sunagakure.

It's not a military dictatorship either; It's a Representative Military "Dual"cracy. The hokage (because we don't entirely know how other kage are chosen) are put into power because the Feudal Lord, Advisers, and the majority of registered Jonin vote him/her in. The resulting Hokage then has power over the military power of the country. The feudal lord has political power over everything else.

From what I can see it depends on the kage and the amount of people that respect/fear them. Garra gets kidnaped and the whole village pulls together and even gets konaohs support. Hanzo gets merked and the villages wakes up the next day under new leader ship.
