People say side characters are "fodder". They are just puppets for the main characters... But, If you think more about it... They really influence the course of plot, influencing the life events of the main characters making the story better or sometimes worse.
For example Konoha side characters held off Pain during the invasion. They influenced the story, prolly giving Naruto more time to master sage mode and consuming a part of Pain's chakra... helping Naruto win. Now if it wasn't for side characters the story would've been different. Maybe Naruto would've died, that leading to either the end of the series or helping the akatsuki... saving them from starting a war and maybe Obito would've been the one that activates IT. Because Naruto played a large part in the war... Obito wouldn't need edo madara and Madara wouldn't have been revived.
Now another example of that is Iruka. He's a semi-side character but he influenced Naruto to have the will he has today.
What I'm trying to say is that people should stop considering side characters as a waste of panels and time. They are important parts of the story.
