Land of Dragons

Riku’s head burst from under the water, as he gapped open his mouth to get some air in his lungs, shaking his head at the same time to get the water off of his face and hair. He swam over until he was lying on his back on a beach. Putting his elbows back and using them to prop himself up, Riku looked around.

Towards the direction he was looking, there wasn’t much. There was only the vast ocean in front of him; apparently he was on a giant island of some sort. In front of him, the water was swirling red water at some spot; he assumed that that must be the portal that he just came out of.

Riku turned, not seeing much from his angle, and gazed upon the island that he was on. It was magnificent. Overhead, very, very high up, he could see figures swirling circles around the island, flying above him but apparently none noticed him. He knew that they weren’t birds, they were much too large. Even at the great distance that was in between Riku and the magnificent creatures, they still seemed rather large. He saw an occasional blast of fire, but was more blue than red.

Dropping his gaze to look directly forward rather than up, Riku looked at the rest of the island. It was like a bunch of black daggers spiking out of the island, each mountain going up so high that Riku couldn’t see any of their tips. The mountains were bunched together, but they parted right in front of Riku, where a long trail sloped upwards. At the top, from afar, he could see an opening. But towering over the mountains, towering far over them, Riku could see a humongous volcano. Lava drooled over the side, oozing down to cover some of the mountains with the fiery liquid.

Getting up, Riku murmured to himself, “Well, let’s get this over with.”

It took Riku a while to make his way up the trail, but eventually, he was at the top, and walking into the large cave entrance. Just before he did, though, a blast of a black fire flew out in front of him from the cave, and thinking quickly, Riku jumped to the side, landing on the side of one of the nearby mountains. For a while there was nothing, Riku withdrew Soul Eater with one hand and placed the other firmly on the side of the mountain, as he stood there, chakra imbued into both feet. Suddenly, from the cave, a large creature burst from inside of it. Its wings were folded back so that it could fit through the cave’s opening, and as he walked out onto the path, its wings still folded so that they wouldn’t bump into any mountains, it craned its neck and looked around. The dragon was large and the darkest shade of black Riku had ever seen. It had two red orbs for eyes and large nostrils that blew out smoke occasionally as he turned. Four teeth were sticking out of his closed mouth, two pointed upwards and two downwards. It’s mouth opened, revealing all of its sharp, deadly teeth, as it released another blast of dark fire into the air.

“Who has come?” the dragon asked, no, demanded, as it looked around for further inspection.

Riku did his best not to be noticed, even closed his eyes and hoped that he wouldn’t be caught. The dragon scanned the area, and suddenly its head stopped and its gaze was fixed.

Right onto Riku.

The dragon lunged out, having enough strength in its legs to not have to unfurl its wings to reach Riku. Quickly , Riku jumped from the side of his mountain to another that was directly across. The dragon swerved to the side just before slamming into the mountain, frantically scraping its claws on the side and then turned in a full U-turn to go outwards and then go right back towards Riku, opening its mouth for another attack. Riku jumped down, onto the pathway and rushed into the cave. The dragon swooped upwards to avoid hitting the top of the cave, flipped over, and then, with another flap of its great wings, swooped down to go through the cave, tucking its wings back in and just barely fitting in through the entrance, despite its vast size.

Just before he came in, though, as he flipped in the air, Riku jumped to the top of cave, watching as the dragon rushed in and then stopped. It let its wings loose, the inside of the cave having a great amount of space in it, and rotated around, looking for its prey. It spotted Riku within a moment, its eyes accustomed to the darkness of the cave, but this time it didn’t rush back out.

“Who are you?” the black dragon demanded.

“R-Riku,” he stammered.

The dragon’s neck craned up, “And...?”

“Vidar sent me, he said that... if I wanted to summon the dragons-”

The dragon snorted, releasing clouds of black smoke, “That fool Vidar thinks that a child can summon us? There is only one human that we would ever answer to. You will be no different than the others who managed to come to us.”

The large dragon jumped up to corner of the cave that Riku was at, and instead of jumping out of the way, Riku jumped down towards the beast, making handseals and finally putting his hand cupped to his mouth, “Water Style: Water Gun.”

A giant blast of water shot out towards the dragon, who flapped his great wings once to put him above the water, and then cocked his head back, and snapped it forward again to release a great fireball to Riku. Instead of dodging, Riku simply dropped himself down from the side of the cave as the fire passed harmlessly over head, as Riku made another handseal.

When he made the seal, Riku’s hand shot out behind him as a blast of wind shot out, sending him up towards the dragon, taking Soul Eater, cocking it back just as the dragon did with his neck, and then lunging it forward to impale right into the dragon’s exposed belly. The dragon let out a horrible shriek and flailed its wings madly, slamming into the top of the cave several times to try and get the sword free, but Riku simply kept pushing the blade in deeper through the creature, and it’s claws reached down under the monster as it yanked Riku off, taking out Soul Eater with it. The dragon flapped its wings again so that it went backwards and allowed itself to land. Upon landing, the creature looked at Riku curiously as he landed, and then winced once more as the pain of the stab began to seer in.

“Vidar sent you... eh?” the dragon asked, and then it stepped a few times to the side, “You may call me Shadow. I am not the leader of the dragons, though; our leader is far more powerful than I. Go ahead, go to our leader."

Riku panted for a moment, and then looked up to Shadow and smiled, “Thank you...” he breathed out, and then continued walking.

Riku kept walking through the cave until he came out of the other side, where there was a large, circular platform surrounded by mountains on all sides. On the far end, though, another trail sloped upwards, and this one led to the volcano, and there seemed to be an opening in it.

Riku walked to the center of the platform, when he heard a loud rumble. Suddenly, all of the mountains around him, including the mountain that held the cave on it, seemed to open up as small, around Riku’s height, legless dragons rushed out of them. The dragons flew quickly, their bodies more serpentine with wings growing out of them and smaller claws than Shadow had. Each one rushed towards Riku from different angles. He jumped directly upwards as all of them slammed into each other, converging at the middle. Riku landed a fair distance away from where the dragons collided, and as the combined, a giant sandstorm seemed to form over the area, swirling and seeming to get smaller and smaller until finally it ceased. In the place of where the vortex of swirling sand had been, there was yet another dragon.

This one was a brownish tan color, the color of sand. He seemed... old. There was a withered look about him, but a look of experience as well. Perhaps withered wasn’t the right word, Riku could tell that he wasn’t weak, if his massive size, comparable to most of these mountains, didn’t show it, then the aura about him did. It was an aura of power, a commanding, deadly aura.

Riku released Soul Eater, and the dragon’s neck came down, “Do not fret, young one; I have not come to fight you. Rather, to warn you.”

Riku took a step back, re-sheathing his blade, not understanding, “Warn me of what?”

“Of the leader of dragons. I am the elder of the dragons, and our leader is far more powerful than any animal there is, and possibly more powerful than all enemies you have faced thus far. Vidar thinks only that you have a chance, but to be honest, he does not expect you to return alive. Will you still go forth, knowing this?”

Riku didn’t hesitate, “I have to. It’s the only way to gain the power that I need.”

The elder dragon gave a booming chuckle, “Do not allow that yearn for power to overwhelm you. It has served as the downfall for many ninja, many times before. I wish you luck, young warrior.”

Riku bowed, feeling that it was the right thing to do in the presence of the elder of this species, and as the dragon shuffled his feet to stand aside, Riku continued into the volcano.

When Riku walked in, he found that he was on a giant, semi-circle platform made of black stone. Around the platform, there was a moat of lava, and every now and then the lava burst up beside Riku. More lava went down the side of it. The platform was but half a circle, and therefore only went around half of the volcano, the other half was a large pool of lava. Riku took Soul Eater back out, prepared for the battle.

The lava began to rumble, the whole volcano did. Magma splashed up on the sides of the volcano, and in the center, a large blast of the magma swirled upwards like a humongous tornado. The lava swirled, as did the molten rock that the tornado had pulled in, and surprisingly none of it splashed up towards Riku or anywhere else. The tornado suddenly receded. And then a final blast of lava shot up into the sky, as if one half of the volcano was erupting and a giant dragon flew out of it, it’s enormous wings large enough to each be capable of covering the volcano. The dragon stood as tall as anything Riku had ever seen. This dragon had to be larger than the hokage’s tower, larger than any mountain that was out there. It just barely fit in the volcano. It landed in front of Riku on the semi-circle, forcing him to take numerous steps back. Riku shuddered as he realized that the dragon’s foot alone was at least few feet taller than he was.

The dragon had two giant horns that stuck out from its head, and a spiked mouth so it seemed that his lip served as teeth as well. From the inside of his partly opened mouth, Riku could see a bright, red-orange light glowing from it that could only be the color of lava. It seemed to have lava inside of it, as not only was its mouth full of it, but its eyes were the same color, as if they were simply empty sockets that showed the lava inside of him. Down the center of his chest was a line of the molten material that oozed outwards and down, and there were several smaller lines across his scaled chest that did the same. He seemed impenetrable, his scales having a certain amount of spikiness to them. His thick tail hung behind him, still hanging over the platform and dipped into the lava so that only a small portion of it was there. Down his back, it was as if his spinal cord had spikes on it as well, a row of spikes running down his back. He was a mixture of molten red and dark as night where his scales were, with a small amount of shininess that made his scales seem like steel. His chin was pointed downwards. Riku also noticed two other, smaller horns that were right under the bigger ones at the top of his head, these seeming to come from his cheeks. He seemed like a giant, armored, lava-dipped dragon.

The dragon let out a roar, and Riku winced and leaned back, but was unable to regain composure after the roar, as the simple sight of the great dragon nearly made him soil himself. The dragon’s head leaned in after the roar, and loomed over Riku, and he looked directly up, scared that lava might spill on his head.

“Who dares enter the lair of Deathwing the Destroyer?” the dragon questioned, his voice booming and so audible that it would be able to be heard for over a thousand miles.

Riku gulped, and then nearly retched at the nerves tugging at his stomach.

He would have to defeat Deathwing.
