The twins looks are depicted in the first image, with Eska to the left most part and Desna to the right. Due to them not knowing their Kekkai Genkai and not learning to control its power, the two never actually merged and has the desire to learn how after hearing the rumors.​

Desna and Eska show very little emotion except for boredom, which is attributable to their shared distaste for most people, places, and things. This distaste extends to Bolin, whom they look down on due to his cocky attitude, despite him being older than they are and their close friend. They speak in a very monotone and matter-of-fact fashion and seem to over-analyze whatever situation they are in. Whenever they do show humor, their laughs are awkward and choppy. Despite their disinterest and apathy on most occasions, Desna and Eska have a close relationship with one another and share many sentiments, particularly in their dry sense of humor which earned them "the holy twin" as a nickname. Eska cares greatly for her brother and his well-being, enough .​

Desna and Eska were both born in Kirigakure by non - ninja parents who lived peacefully. From birth the twin were troublesome and took care of each other, although they avoided trouble and miscreants. It was suspected that they might possess the extremely rare Kekkai Genkai Souma no Ko. Their parents relocated the family to a small village and started training them in secret when they were nine years old when their parents were not away on trade expeditions. Not long after their maturity there was a raid on their
town. Though the twins were talented, they had combat experience and were a match for the attacking group but wanting to explore the ninja world they allowed themselves to be kidnapped. As the group left their village, the twins broke out of the caravan destroying the group by themselves before wandering round the Ninja world where they eventually met Bolin as they both formed an alliance to protect one another. Eska developed an affection towards Bolin while Desna always had an urge to kill Bolin out of love for his sister but he keeps it in and as a result they were living amicably from battle to battle, village to village with one another. Eska never leaves Desna's side and vice versa, staying with each other to the very end, making this what Bolin admires between them. Bolin later gave them "the Holy twin" as nickname to express their absolute meekness and serenity.​

Also, the twins can perform raiton handseals faster than normal ninjas.
