But what do you guys think.
After reading today's chapter and seeing the unveil of the 4th hokage's sage mode, it dawned on me and seemed pretty clear that sage mode is the hidden leaf's hokage staple. It just seems like it is a must in order to claim the status. And once I begin thinking about it I could begin to see a pattern and theorize.
First Hokage - Hashirama: Has Sage Mode
Second Hokage - Tobirama: It's a strong possibility that tobirama does have sage mode, especially if hashirama has it, because we know that they trained together. I don't see why he wouldn't. His chakra reserves are not to far off from his brothers making it possible for him to learn it. Tobirama also seems knowledgeable of sage mode and I don't see why he would know of a ability that can strengthen his power and not aquire it to help him defend the village.
Third Hokage - Hiruzen: It's also a strong possibility that hiruzen has sage mode (a monkey variant). He carries a monkey king by his side which has already givin us reasons to believe in a monkey sage mode. Hiruzen was also the teacher of the sannin which all control summons from legendary sage locations. When tobirama choose the next hokage he could have choosen hiruzen over danzo because hiruzen also knew sage mode. Hiruzen was also said to have mastered all techniques that reside within konoha and sage mode would fall into that catetory, so I really think it is possible for hiruzen to have it. (side note: if he does have ape/monkey sage mode I feel as thought it would be the coolest one seen thus far)

Fifth Hokage - Tsunade: It is said that her summon katsuya is from the legendary Shikkotsu Forest, which is to be equal to the other places (toad mountain and snake cave). Which means a sage mode can oringinate from there as well. It truly would surprise me if tsunade introduced sage mode, since her previous teammates have it. They only reason I could see tsunade not using it thus far is because she would rather rely on her yin seal.
Now that shows all the hokage. But another thing I realized when I though about the seat for hokage, are the ones who were candidates:
Fourth Hokage Candidate Orochirama - was suppose to be the the fourth hokage, and he is known to possess the ability to use senjutsu. His only problem was he didn't have the right vessel who could use it sage mode itself.
Fifth Hokage Candidate Jiraiya - Has sage mode
Sixth Hokage Candidate Naruto - Has sage mode
I truly believe that all the hokage probally possess sage mode, and the only true candidates for the hokage seat possess it as well. its like to golden standard to being hokage.
