So I am sitting here in a session of McKinsey partner. My expectations from the session was that I would hopefully network with him so that my chances of getting recruited in the placement process increases. Also, studying in a premier B school, I thought it would go like other Business Leader's sessions go. They generally come and tell their success story grilling in how essential business decisions are and what should we do in finance, strategy and what not, to make it to where they have made it -Uber's India president said so, GE's global vice chairman also only discussed what electives are most important and what are the important business decisions he made etc. etc.
This guy starts with :-
"When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that guy has to say.
For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Who judgement upon you must pass.
The feller whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the guy staring back from the glass.
He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear up to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.
You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,
And think you're a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.
You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you've cheated the guy in the glass."
He explains how his life changed when he read this and then tells us how all of his decisions have been impacted only by his personal decisions and tells us why it is most important to do what you do for yourself first and secondly for people that you care. Nobody else matters. Then goes on to discuss his takes on certain existential questions, what is life about, what you should do with it etc. He says figure these out for yourself first and then whatever you align yourself with, you will be at the Top. I was getting all caught up in grades and electives and extra circulars, which would make me the perfect candidate for those dream jobs. This has changed my future plans a little bit. Hope, whatever you are doing, you stop and ask these questions to yourself and then decide your path
