So earlier today I was like "I wonder if the new manga chapter has come out yet" so I got on my phone and decided to check. I found it and read it and immediately drove home so that I could post my thoughts on it, so if anyone else has said this I apologize, but I am completely enamored with this chapter and want to write something while my feelings are still fresh.
Why do I think this chapter is so amazing? I think it has the greatest twist Kishi has written in a long time
The Uchiha Clan actually treasures love more than the Senju.
Why is this such a good twist in my opinion?
1. It makes the Uchiha's hatred/powers much more interesting
I think this is an incredible twist, because it gives us answers to things that we probably never thought were going to be elaborated further on. Tobirama explains that the Uchiha's brain produces a special type of chakra which effects their optic nerve when they experience the loss of a loved one. This helps explain the MS activation not just in terms of logistics or what is required but also places Sharingan powers within a more general framework of the plot so that it does not seem as completely random. One thing Kishi has done throughout his manga has stressed that strong feelings lead to strength. The Senju's strong feelings came from the desire to be acknowledged and bring people together. Other people's strong feelings came from the pain of isolation and loneliness such as Gaara. Nagato's strong feelings came from the pain of loss. This places the Sharingan's powers much more blatantly within this framework.
Why do Uchiha clan have the MS when a loved one dies? "Because they're Uchiha" instead becomes "Because they're Uchiha and it reflects their inner feelings. I'm super interested in where Kishi goes with this. I think it has a ton of potential and makes the Uchiha's curse of hatred much more interesting.
2. Kishi clearly planned this ( I know it's his manga and he "plans" everything but some twists are unconvincing)
I think the greatest thing about this chapter is that it didn't seem to just be random, but when I was reading it I immediately thought of a bunch of relevant quotes from earlier in the manga.
Take this scan and then suddenly Madara/Obito/Sasuke's motivations are suddenly not as ridiculous.
Madara
In this scan Madara is talking about the causal relationships of the world. He says that hatred is born to protect love, thereby tying hatred and love together in a necessary causal relationship. If love exists hatred must necessarily follow, you can not have love without hatred. Madara tying love and hatred together in such a way is exactly how it plays out for the Uchiha, if they love and lose, then hatred will always follow.
Obito
This point is a bit more obscure, but bear with me. There has been plenty of frustration over Obito's motivations to become evil. People didn't really have a problem with Madara being evil, because well he is a super powerful badass, but Obito going from the boy who inspired Kakashi with his "those who abandon their teammates are scum" to "I am no one" made very little sense.
However, I think this chapter provides us with plenty of reason for why Obito joined Madara. He must've truly loved Rin based on his rampage and reaction. It is pretty much the same answer as before, only now I think it is a bit more satisfying. The scans I linked make it clear that all Obito wants is to be with Rin in the dream world. His love was so intense that he can't let go and he even almost transcends hating any one person to hating reality itself. He must have really loved Rin... we don't know why but the proof is in the pudding... maybe Kishi will tell us why later?
Why does Obito only care about Rin? Why does Sasuke go insane after learning the truth about Itachi? The strength of their love makes it impossible to let go. This makes way more sense than the "curse of hatred" without this elaboration.
3. "When a man learns to love, he must bear the risk of hatred"
This is a quote from one of the anime episodes which Tobi says about Sasuke after he finds out the truth about Itachi and swears revenge on Konoha. I think this quote is really relevant though, and wish it had been part of the manga, because it would have been awesome for this Uchiha love revelation. The Senju encompass all of the good parts of love, which means that the Uchiha are used to exemplify the dark side/risk of love, namely that the stronger the love you feel the stronger the pain of loss and hatred from that pain.
Maybe it's just me that read "No other clan treasured love as much as the Uchiha" and flipped out, but I am literally already back on the Kishi is a genius bandwagon and totally okay with him bringing back the hokages.
P.S.- I think I'm a Hashi fanboy now, I like him way more as a super-powerful goofball than the way we thought he was before.
