Basically, I saw this:
And I thought, what Naruto character truly inspires?
Itachi? No. Itachi is a ninja paragon, but he was blessed with intellect, skill, and a bloodline that ultimately put him on par with legendary ninja when he was only a child.
The same problem is encountered, to varying degrees, with most of the heroes in Naruto.
Minato had the innate, magical talent and intellect. Hashirama had magic cells. All the elites, to some degree or another, were just gifted their abilities, whether through birth or circumstance, and it took me only a short while to realize the king of Narutoverse in this aspect:
I think Rock Lee epitomizes what Naruto should have been before all this child of destiny and Kurama nonsense went out of control. Rock Lee is an underdog with a heart of steel. Even Sasuke, singularly focused and driven by immeasurable hatred for Itachi, knew that, upon meeting Lee, that Lee's drive was far beyond him, Naruto, or anybody for that matter.
This was the single greatest moment in the manga for me:
And it fills me with great pleasure, after remembering this:
To see this:
Gai should be proud.
