As opposed to popular belief, Minato' gift to Naruto, isn't the yin portion of the 9 tails.
Let's think about it; What could Naruto do with the yin chakra?
Uses of yin are limited to two main things. 1) Genjutsu: we all know, that Naruto has zero genjutsu mastery, so having the yin would be pretty useless imo.
2)Creating from imagination: We know that yin is used to create/summon imaginary things, such as susanoo and the 2nd Mizukage' big clam!
Naruto, severely lacks in both yin techs. I just see no reason for him to acquiring the yin chakra of the 9 tails!
I believe, that Minato' gift is not related to the 9 tails yin chakra. I think it's something related to ST/FTG.

It would restore the Kyuubi to full strength, thus strengthen all of his current powers and techniques. And since he's out of gas, the yin chakra would be pretty useful right now.

i agree that it's not the yin chakra either but i think the present is related to naruto's seal because minato wanted naruto to control half of kurama's chakra and naruto's seal changed when he did

Minato's gift to Naruto was more complex than just one thing. By making Naruto the Jinchuriki, Minato essentially made Naruto one of the most powerful people in the word. However, it was unlikely that a baby could resist Kurama at full strength. Therefore, Minato chose to weaken Kurama temporarily in order to give Naruto time to develop a kind of natural resistance against such powerful chakra. It isn't that he sealed away half of Kurama forever. Chakra regenerates over time, and therefore, Kurama's yang chakra would eventually regenerate. However, this would take time; time that would allow Naruto to build up his own chakra to counteract Kurama's.

The reason the Minato left Kurama's yin chakra in Naruto has more to do with Naruto's own chakra than it does with Kurama's. The two reasons that I see Minato leaving the yin chakra are that he knew that Naruto had primarily yang chakra and therefore he didn't want to mix two chakras with the same characteristics; or that he wanted Naruto to develop his own chakra to have yang characteristics. The Asian philosophy of yin and yang are all about balance.

More than likely, Naruto was going to eventually become Kurama's host anyway. After the Uzumaki clan was destroyed, the candidate pool essentially disappeared. If Kushina hadn't died the night of Naruto's birth, she would have eventually died of old age, and that would only leave Naruto as a viable candidate for Jinchuriki. With his experience with Kushina and Bee, Minato realized that in order for Naruto to attain true power, he needed more than just raw strength. Otherwise, he would have ended up like Gaara prior to the Chunin Exams.
