I'm pretty sure there are Japanese translations of English comics and there was a Last Airbender movie which was shown worldwide.

I'm pretty sure there are Japanese translations of English comics and there was a Last Airbender movie which was shown worldwide.

The highlight of the series was the cartoon, which was dubbed in Japan but they never even aired it because

a) American cartoons like Avatar are unimaginably unpopular and unknown in Japan. And pointless really, when they have such a strong and varied animated media base of their own.
b) The likes of Avatar can be deemed derogatory since it basically suggests Japanese and Chinese culture are one of the same by bunching them together as labelling it as simply Asian.

With this in mind, the cartoons are much more well-known than the comics in the West so with an already minuscule following of the cartoons in Japan, you end up with a nano-sized following of the comics. None of that even accounts for the fact that any spare time Kishi has would be spent with his wife and his kids, and not searching for/reading comics that will be nigh-impossible to find there.
