In real life we constantly create illusions and lies to shield ourselves from everything around us. Nobody really likes the world in the end, we simply exist in it because we have no real choice in the matter. A dream isn't much better its the ultimate example of escapism. In fact most if not all religions revolve around this idea. Ultimately Humans always search for a reason to exist but sad fact is that there are none. That is why we try to escape from reality because its meaningless.
I'm not a depressed person, having an outlook on reality like this might sound bad but really every day I see people going through the motions at work or school or whatever and I do the same. Except I'm not sticking my fingers in my ears shouting "LALALALALALA" as loudly as I can trying to convince myself that anything I'm doing has the slightest point to it whatsoever.
