Hey does anybody know what type of animal did the first hokage learned sage mode from ?

People have been trying to guess ever since it was showen but don't you think the simplest answer and the correct one is that it is not from any kind of animal but just his nature his whole jutsu itself is nature so I think nature energy the key sage mode is just natural to him just like breathing so I don't think it has anything to do with any animal it is just tied into his jutsu........

Hashirama's immense chakra reserves are great enough that he could enter Sage Mode,

and as far as I know, Sage Mode doesn't necessarily needs animals..

either a slug sage mode, because of his connection to Tsunade, and his healing abilies.
Or a Generic Sage mode that is a byproduct of his mokuton abilities and it's natural energy affinity.

mokuton is a nature energy kekkei genkai,why because he grows tree from the earth which is nature itself.hashi's chakra itself is a source of life,he has the sage body and lifeforce,i think if he could do a natural jutsu like mokuton sage mode is also natural jutsu too so he can activate is own with the help of high chakra reserves,lifeforce,stamina and so on that he alone possess.

Its most likely a sage mode based on nature, its not impossible for someone to gain transformations without animals, jugo clan have transformed into forms that resemble juubi fissions and even rikudo sennin without animals, I think it most likely goes into the japanese belief of enlightenment, Hashirama with his mokuton must have become so close and one with nature that he was enlightened by the forces of nature, He became one with them..

thus we see him in that mode, summoning creatures that are keynote, divine beings in japanese culture, the Buddha statue, the dragon with the human, all of them are japanese culture

well, i remember itachi or kabuto saying sth about "you can learn sage mode in three legendary places" . we already know about the toads and the snakes, so the biggest possibility is the third are slugs " due to the sannin summonings " but we're still not sure because it wasn't mentioned in an obvious way.....

Naruto is one of the best for learning through doing, yet he still needed 'words' as you so loosely put it.

You cannot compare simple meditation to learning to use Sage Mode, there is far more to be learnt, so the only one being ignorant is you.
