[Discussion] The first enemies

As I look back at the first few enemies of OP I cant help but wonder if they would be one of the things that keep the people from pushing onwards into the series.

Don Krieg,Buggy,the metal dude whose name I forgot from the Chopper arc and even Arlong and his friends(well mostly his friends,he looked bretty bad ass) all look very cartoonish (in a way that they mostly seem like joke characters which who would be used to entertain little kids yet they are actually real opponents)

I know for me it was weird but I knew about the enemies that would come later on so I knew it would get better (and more serious) but for people who dont rly know this I wonder if they just dont bother continuing thinking it will all be some random stuff all the time.

What do you think about the first few enemies,did it bother you at all or did you enjoy them all?

I enjoyed Buggy, but Wapol reminds me of Munchlax, Don Krieg was a joke, lookin' like Lois with that crooked ass nose.

Good point, this is why people need to give it a bit of time for One Piece to get that serious feel which similar manga have.

Don't you dare speak down on Buggy. The guy is a boss and a shichibukai. Also I liked Axe hand Morgan, he was a good villain, a little over the top but still good.

Buggy was entertaining, but he didn't really reach his stride as a character until the Impel Down arc.

I've nothing against Morgan and Kuro. The chief bandit from Luffy's childhood filled his role well and Alvida wound up being fun upon her return in the Lougetown arc.

I love Don Krieg. He's still one of my favorite villains and his fight with Luffy is my favorite in the series. I really like Gin as well and Pearl was decent too.

Arlong is also a great villain and I enjoyed his crew too.

If you can't appreciate that, you shouldn't be reading One Piece.

It's one of the things which makes this series stand out. If you want generic shounen bad guys go read something else. Besides the guys you named in early One Piece, you should ask yourself if it's just early One Piece or that goofy characters are something that are just a common thing.

Just look at Big Mom, Doflamingo, Ivankov etc.

I do appreciate thr brginning of OP but not for its villains but because it sets up the core of the SH crew, their bonds, values, deams, background and nakamaship which makes the 640 chapters after that much better

I said one of the things, and this topic is about early villains. So I don't get what you're trying to say here

I started and stopped watching 4 times before actually getting to the good stuff. I was so bored in the beginning.

Well mostly that I agree that some of the early villains are a bit lame, not because of their goofiness but because some of them were very much inferior to Luffy. My point was that the first 100 chapters are NOT focused on the villains but mostly just on the SH's, it's mostly to establish them as a crew and not to show powerful villains and great threats, I think many people expect someone like crocodile in the first arc because it's a battle manga and are disappointed because of it, me personally O think that the set up for the SH's makes the rest of the story better and it doesn't bother me
