It’s no secret that the Hyuuga clan has mostly been neglected. Neji was an impressive character in part one, but in part two he was mostly neglected, making his death scene feel rushed and unemotional. Hinata got a few interesting scenes, but for the most part was pushed to the side and never had any real time to shine. Hanabi Hyuuga got essentially no screen time at all. We didn’t even get significant lore or history of the Hyuuga clan the same way we got for the Uchiha.
This brings us to part three or The Next Generation. Hinata is once again pushed to the side, but let us focus on the new generation. Hinata has two children: Boruto and Himawari. While Boruto is technically a Hyuuga, he uses Naruto’s techniques instead of his mother’s, and the anime has seemed to confirm that he does not have the Byakugan (though we still need more information about this). In short, Boruto has very little connection to the Hyuuga clan.
This leaves us with Himawari. We know Himawari has the Byakugan. She even managed to perform a gentle fist technique powerful enough to knock out Naruto and Kurama (though this was mostly for comedy). However, despite all this, despite being the daughter of the previous main character and the sister of the current main character, Himawari is in danger of being completely neglected as well.
In both the anime and manga, Himawari has gotten very little screen time. The few times she appears on screen, she is mostly just helping her mother cook, and not doing much else. Himawari is about two years younger than Boruto, which would make her close to ten years old (her exact age isn’t clear). However, we have yet to see her once in the Academy or doing training of any kind. She once awakened the Byakugan, but we have not seen her train in Byakugan or gentle fist techniques.
Himawari has the potential to be an important and perhaps powerful character. By rights, she should be a main character, seeing as she is Naruto’s daughter. We can only hope that as the manga progresses, Himawari is given time to shine.
