Fire is hot... It is produced by the chemical process of combustion, producing a fast oxidation of a material, which process produces heat, light and, if the flame is hot enough, can cause matter to go into the fourth state of matter, called plasma. In the Narutoverce, fire release is a chakra nature, which creates fire; this is done through the following process: first, the shinobi able to use fire release creates a special kind of gass in his/her stomach (using fire chakra nature), and, by exhaling, he or she indignates this gass, and controls it with fire chakra. One of the Uchiha clan's trademark is their mastery over this chakra nature and their natural affinity towards using it. Their very emblem and name, the Uchiha, is a fan that is used (in real life, in japan) to enhance the intensity of a fire. Madara Uchiha has shown exceptional mastery over this chakra nature, when he used a wall of fire that covered the whole battlefield. Itachi, Sasuke and most of the other members of the Uchiha clan are known or presumed exceptional users of it. Outside of the Uchiha Clan, the Sarutobi (3rd Hokage, Asuma, Konohamaru) seem to be quite good in using this chakra nature too. The kekei genkai that use fire as one of their components are the following:
Dark (Fire + Lighting)
Lava (Fire + Earth)
Scroch (Fire + Wind)
Boil (Fire + Water)
It is also a component to the Kekei Dota "Dust Release", wich is created by combining Fire + Wind + Earth.

Katon is weak to suiton, which will extinguish it.
It is neutral to Doton, but (with the right amount of heat) will turn it into lava by melting it
It is Neutral to Raiton, but a combination of the 2 can be very useful, as they cover each other's weakness (Katon will burn futon aka Raiton's weakness wile Raiton will electrify suiton (katon's weakness), and might cause the suiton user a problem, if he is in derect contact with it.)
It is strong against Futon, as the wind will only empower the fire's intensity.

[I sit down, and light the lighter. I then focus on the flame, it's warmth, heat and light. I can feel the warmth, and try to replicate it with my chakra. I then can feel heat in my stomach, raging with destructive power.]

Focus on controlling the fire. It's naturally wild and explosive, and allowed unchecked will consume everything including you.

[I start focusing again, except this time, I gain control of my chakra as soon as it exits my mouth. I focus to make the small fire steady, so it won't blow up unexpectedly. I can feel the warmth and the raging power of the fire, as I manipulate the flame to float right in front of me. I then add to it's intensity, and destructive power, to make it manifest itself as a small camp fire. ]

You just used the second one. As for the first, preform the quick set of hand seals and focus chakra to the air in your lungs, and form it into flammable gas. You spew this out, and once it comes in contact with a spark, it com-busts.
I focus katon chakra to my lungs, wile performing the following hand seals Snake → Ram → Monkey → Tiger. As the katon chakra is infused with the air in my lungs, it transforms into flammable gas. I then breath the flammable gas in front of me, and once I'm out of range from it, by jumping backwards, I throw a raiton infused kunai in the gas. The spark from the raiton makes the gas combursts into a fire ball.
