It's increasingly obvious Madara Aizen'd this whole thing. Here's how I think it went down.
1) Madara vs. Hashirama ends with both parties horribly injured. Hashirama suffers wounds that won't easily heal and seals Kurama inside Mito. He dies. Madara survives, unknown to Hashirama and Tobirama
2) Years later, Madara has slightly recovered and is going to attack the village to draw Tobirama out. He cracks the secrets of Edo Tensei by placing Tobirama in genjutsu and murdering him on the spot. Hiruzen and crew escape. The rest is history.
3) Orochimaru runs into Madara and makes a trade: Oro gets Hashirama cells for his research and Edo Tensei knowledge, and Madara's secret is safe. Oro agrees to aid Madara at the appointed hour. (i.e. now)
4) Madara finds Obito, and implants the chakra rods in him. He uses them and black Zetsu to effectively rob Obito of his original personality and make him a walking puppet that has to suffer as he is used against his hometown. Obito grows bitter and develops the "I am nobody, it doesn't matter what I do" attitude. The Tobi attitude was infact Spiral Zetsu talking, and the evil one talking to Naruto was the real Madara speaking through Obito.
5) Madara always planned to sacrifice Obito, not Nagato, as the sacrifice. Why? Nagato was needed to attack the village and destroy it. Madara suspected all along Nagato would be defeated by the village.
6) Madara planned the Uchiha clan massacre after his own death, as revenge for them abandoning 'the fight' against the Senju. He planned everything, including Minato's death at Obito's hands and Kurama being sealed inside Naruto. Because he wanted to see whether his Curse of Hatred was right or if Hashirama was right.
In essence, Madara is a perfectionist egomaniac that wants to become the next Sage of the Six Paths and rule the world as something greater than God and to settle once and for all which son of the Sage was correct. In the end, Sasuke will probably step in and die so that Naruto can beat Madara.
Maybe he didn't plan Kurama being sealed, since he tried to summon him
