Yamato begins by casting an illusion on Hashirama. In this illusion, Hashirama will find himself bound in a flower bud which explodes almost instantly.

Hashirama watches this figure appear in front of him. The figure gives off a very familiar feeling, almost like he was facing himself.Brushing off the feeling Hashi notices a flower appear out of nowhere. The flower didn't grow from the ground it just seemed to appear outta nowhere. Thinking fast Hashi figures this must be an illusion, since that's the only logical reason for a flower to bloom from nothing. Hashi performs one single quick handseal, this handseal causes his chakra to stop and then to spike causing the illusion to disappear. With the illusion dispelled Hashi sees his opponent before him but he notices that he has slammed his hands onto the ground.

Not seeing anything happen Hashi thinks this is just a ploy to trick Hashi, until he hears the sound of falling water. With his attention brought to the sound he looks all around. Not seeing on his sides he looks down up and notices a huge amount of water heading toward him. What an amateur. Hashi says as a single plank of wood erupts to his right. The plank erupts upward ar a slant, it also covers a three meter area with Hashi in the center. The falling water hits the plank and splashes outward with most of it sliding down the plank. You're wood better than mine? You really need to stop smoking. Hashi shouts at his opponent in a mocking tone. Hashi then pulls out two kunais with explosive tags attached and throws them at his opponent. The two kunais are aimed to land a meter on each side and to explode when they hit the ground.

On seeing the plank that Hashirama erupted to protect himself from the water, Yamato quickly creates 3 pillar that rise rapidly from the ground, sending Hashirama into his own plank which is just above his head; the force of the collision between his head and the plank is enough to do considerable damage to his neck, if not break it even. Yamato simultaneously hurls 3 explosive shurikens at Hashirama.

With the plank looming above his head Hashirama feels the ground below him start to move. Without wasting a second, and knowing the plank is above his head, Hashi sends his chakra done though the ground and creates wood to sprout horizontally under the ground. The wood under the ground grows into the pillar and thus stops your pillars from lifting Hashi any higher than he already is. Hmm, smart move but not smart enough. Hashi says as he watches you throw the shuriken. Hashi nonchalantly performs one hand seal. With the handseal Hashi takes a deep breathe and exhales a huge sphere of rotating water. The water bullet heads straight into the shurikens and easily sucks them. The bullet continues on towards you. You know wood users should also know how to fight in close range Hashi says in a taunting voice.

Yamato keeps a keen eyeon Hashirama's movements and notices that his pillar technique doesn't work. "Hmm, he uses a technique of higher rank to overpower mine." As he thinks to himself whilst he threw the shurikens, he sees Hashirama form 1 handseal and expel water towards him. Reacting quickly, he focuses chakra beneath himself and beneath Hashirama as he continues to think, "But he wouldn't think I'd do exactly the same thing again..." With that, two pillars rise swiftly from the ground, one beneath Yamato and the other beneath Hashirama, throwing both men into the air. Yamato performs 1 handseal as he is being thrown above the water (you won't see this as the water obstructs your view of me), placing the Wood Sage in an illusion and Hashirama is again attempted to be pushed upwards to damage his neck against the plank which is still there. Yamato will then hurl a single explosive kunai at Hashirama that will appear to him as a clone of Yamato instead of the rapidly descending kunai that it is.

"I know how to fight at close range. Even my clone will defeat you at close range."

He uses the word 'clone' so that Hashirama has no reason to suspect anything.
