1. All hope must be lost- it would have to be that or some other main character would be in trouble with no other clear solution to save them. (Don't expect him soon)
2. It's uncertain if joining the 2 halves of Kurama would be necessary or that. Gyuki's chakra is needed I believe.
THEORY: When the sage split up the 10 tails he placed a part of his spirit in each of the tailed beasts and when they all come together it gave obito the look of the sage. Naruto is the reincarnation of the sage and the right "vessel" for all the tailed beast chakra. When all those chakras comes together he will appear.
3. More tragedy- Deaths of certain characters will be needed as it stands.
4. Sasuke....- Obito not only being an uchiha also obviously holds senju chakra. It might be what's necessary. Sasuke and Naruto are entwined by fate to fight as was with Hashirama and Madara and before them. The 2 sons of the sage himself. Sasuke's chakra or DNA might be a key to awaken the sage's spirit.
