In 2009, the movie Avatar became an unlikely hero, taking the title of "highest grossing film in history when unadjusted for inflation" from Titanic after 12 years. And at almost 2.8 billion dollars, it'll likely keep the title for a long time.

Now, the Avengers is becoming a likely contestant to be the next highest-grossing film of all time. It's already brought in 300 million, and that's before its release in North America, where the most movie-goers are. Do you think it'll outgross Avatar by the end of the year?

Supposedly, it was absolutely amazing. Critics gave it a 96 before it released here in North America, and it only went down to a 93 even then.
And idk about that. I thought First Avenger was pretty good.

i think so! the reason is that it's going to attract fans of all age groups. basically everybody knows of the avengers and knowing that there is going to be a live action movie of them only makes the entire world wants to buy a ticket!!

Avatar 2 will beat The Avengers. But The Avengers 2 may beat Avatar 2. But what if Avatar 3 beats The Avengers 2. Will this madness ever stop!!!

On a serious note, I think Avatar won't be beaten anytime soon. Avengers will do pretty well.

He was talking about James Cameron's Avatar, not the Last Airbender. I just saw it and its a pretty good movie.

There's no way that it'll reach $ 2 Billion IMO.

Given its exceptional opening level, it might surpass The Dark Knight and become the Highest Grossing Superhero movie but that's it.

Got yet to see it but heard that it's f**kin' awesome from many people.

I don't think they will make it, but I'm sure they will come close. Fans from all the different Marvel heroes will come to the cinema to see it, and if you combine all of them, I won't be surprised if they come close to Avatar

Looks like most of ya are on the side of "no, but close". I actually just saw the movie today myself, and I was absolutely amazed by it. Lived up to its hype, action was awesome, correspondence between characters was almost even better. Oddly enough, the comic relief of the film came mostly from Ruffalo and the Hulk rather than Downey Jr. and Iron Man I almost feel that I'd be kinda mad if it doesn't outgross Avatar now.

Apparently the film beat out Harry Potter 7 part 2 for the biggest gross for an opening weekend ($200 mil). So, I'm heightening my expectations and it'll at LEAST reach spot #3, which would put it below the only two films to have reached 2 billion. Even if it doesn't hit the 2B mark by year's-end, I think it's definitely gonna reach it at some point in time.

The film just passed Transformers 3 (over $1.1 billion) as the 4th highest-grossing film, and it's only been out for a little over two weeks in North America. The year's not even halfway done yet, so I stand by my beliefs that it'll surpass Avatar, whether it's by the end of this year or not.
