Uzumaki's were priests, they weren't warriors like the Senjus and Uchihas they can't fend themselves not so well, it's stated in Naruto Wiki that Kushina's Ninjitsu wasn't that great at all and I guess this would show that the Uzumaki's are not being such a battle-esquye clans. I imagine that eddy village must be built with mass amounts of shrines and also with lots and lots of towers I persume? It's a coastal area also manifested with whirlpools I guess?

Obito (through controlling the Fourth Mizukage) may have ordered kirigakure shinobis to demolish the village. Looks like the village had lots and lots of towers to me.
