Chapter 18: Eruption of the Demon’s War
Saito Hibiki was peacefully slumbering, comfortably tucked under the hospital bed blankets, while Sora Hitomi busied herself with arranging flowers and inquiring to the assigned nurses for updates. Several days have passed and Hitomi still had no idea what happened during the previous examination. The only thing the Lady Hokage said was that Hibiki was in a good condition, already on his way to making a speedy recovery. Reminiscing upon this, Hitomi let out a sigh of relief, longing for the day that Hibiki will jump out of the bed, good as new.
Her moment was disrupted as someone raptly knocked on the door. She answered it and was surprised and suddenly tensed as she saw Shizune with another shinobi with a recognizable white and spiky hair. They stepped inside and proceeded to walk towards Hibiki’s bed. However, Hitomi blocked their path with her arms outstretched, as though daring them to come any closer.
“Hitomi, pardon us, but we were assigned to do this,” Shizune reasoned, looking to her companion for support. “It’s all part of the procedure. Don’t worry, we won’t harm him.”
Hitomi’s arms slowly retreated to her sides, yet her face seemed to be disturbed; her eyes welled with tears. The shinobi reacted to this quickly.
“Don’t worry, miss,” the man said sweetly. “I assure you that the procedure will be over quickly.”
“Kakashi, please proceed,” Shizune said urgently and immediately prepared a syringe, making Hitomi shake with fright even more. Shizune noticed and tried to calm the lady down. “Don’t worry, for this is just a dose of anaesthesia and sedative so that Hibiki here won’t feel anything.”
Hatake Kakashi waited for Shizune’s ‘go’ signal. A few seconds after the drug was administered, Kakashi threw a handful of kunai surrounding Hibiki’s bed; he wove the first few seals and two concentric circles formed and traced the kunai on the floor; ripple markings made up these circles. Just as Kakashi finished weaving seals, he put his palm on Hibiki’s right forearm and performed the Curse Sealing. The invisible tomoe mark came into view, and then was immediately crept on by the strange markings from the floor and formed a circular seal similar to Uchiha Sasuke’s. After the ritual, Kakashi pulled out and kept the kunai, while Shizune injected another dose of the drug. Both left the room without a word, leaving Hitomi speechless, staring at the visible and horrific seal that rested on Hibiki’s right palm.
“It has been done. Although I doubt that it will restrain that power for long,” Kakashi said to Shizune as they walked out of the hospital. “I’ll have to make sure that the kid can’t access that power unless the seal breaks.”
“Be my guest. However, you must remember that a war is nearing,” Shizune agreed, her mind still thinking about Hitomi’s pathetic expression. “We have limited time. The war might erupt without warning.”
“I understand.”
Momura Rouzuke was sleeping on one of the large wooden crates layered with white cloths. He awoke with a start, feeling a disturbance from afar. His actions seemed to have alarmed White Zetsu, who quickly questioned Rouzuke about what happened. Rouzuke merely shrugged and went back to sleep. His eyes weren’t closed, as he was thinking of what he just sensed a few moments before. He knew that people have already discovered the mark that he planted on Hibiki, as he sensed a part of the chakra return to him at a short notice, meaning that he already lost some of the control over the latter’s mind and body.
White Zetsu approached Rouzuke warily and cautiously, afraid that he might be stepping on an unseen fine thread of patience. He reconsidered however, seeing that Sasuke stirred from his rest and asked White Zetsu when the bandages can be removed. White Zetsu merely responded that the bandages will be taken off by Madara himself, as he was the one who did the operation. Rouzuke slowly rose from his crate as he consumed the words carefully, trying to read between the lines. He glimpsed Sasuke, finally noticing the wraps around the head, sending a shivering feeling up his own spine as he remembered his own experiences in the hands of experimenters.
Madara appeared into view, just in time to see Rouzuke’s disturbed face. He was about to speak when Rouzuke interrupted, telling him to step outside.
They walked silently out of the hideout, with Madara somehow knowing what Rouzuke will ask, and was ready for an answer.
“Who are you?” Rouzuke began, his eyes fixed to Madara’s mask. “I saw the real Uchiha Madara from the coffin, so it’s impossible that you can be him! Explain yourself!”
“Calm down,” Madara responded, apparently amused with his follower’s early doubts. “You may have seen the real Madara as a dead man, yet his ideals live within me. You’ll just have to trust me on the plan, the Moon’s Eye Plan.”
“How do you expect me to trust you? And what the hell is this ‘Moon’s Eye Plan’?”
“I plan to bring eternal peace to the Shinobi World with the Ten Tails’ power, the power of the Sage of the Six Paths to create anything at will. With that power, my ideals will be realized and done.”
“You’re digging from an empty spot. The Sage you are talking about is just a myth to explain how the world of shinobi came to be and how the moon was created. You speak nonsense.”
“Which is why you fail to see the ingenuity of my plan. You’ve become too blinded by the practical and reality of the world. You fail to understand how my plan would be able to change the world for good, that every person on earth will experience true happiness.”
“This Moon’s Eye Plan of yours, based on how you’ve delved into the myth so badly, would be to revive the Ten Tails, control it and use it to bring eternal genjutsu upon the world?”
“In essence, you are correct. Yet you still do not realize the importance of unity and eternal peace. You only see the short term disadvantages and become blinded from the long term benefits.”
“I seem to have been with a madman. You’re crazy, and judging from how you talk, you must be senile, reliving the ridiculous stories and folklore.”
“This is the reason I didn’t want to disclose to you my agenda. However, you can’t go against me, unless you want to die helplessly.”
Rouzuke hesitated. He thought of the number of possibilities that he would escape unscathed from his leader, given the fact that even Yakushi Kabuto was on the team which slimmed his chances of living by a few notches. He fell silent; he was trying to figure out his next move, while Madara looked satisfied that he won the argument.
“Though I’ve disguised my name as Uchiha Madara, you may call me ‘Tobi’ for the time being,” Madara continued, attempting to derail Rouzuke’s thoughts. “We are adjourned. Tell White Zetsu to stay and guard with you our friend, Sasuke. The war will soon be on its way.”
Without further objections, both separated ways, with one returning to the base while the other in a nameless void. Rouzuke went back inside, his mind in distraught over what he just heard. His decision was made, and he activated his Cursed Seal of Hell.
A few more intense days passed, and Hibiki was already back on his feet. He was training with the shinobi of Konoha, trying to get exercise from the time he was incapacitated in the hospital. Even Hitomi was joining the fray, defending from most of the attacks and dodging projectiles with ease. Hibiki fought with his blindfold on, and he was easily taking down his opponents.
He jumped out of Nara Shikamaru’s Shadow techniques as well as Inuzuka Kiba’s Fang Over Fang, parried Tenten’s ninja tools and Aburame Shino’s bugs, blocked Akimichi Chouji’s Human Boulder and Haruno Sakura’s fists, reversed both Hyuuga Neji and Hinata’s Gentle Fists, and countered Rock Lee’s Eight Inner Gates. Hitomi was also playing her role, disrupting Yamanaka Ino’s Mind-Body Switching technique, as well as distracting the others away from Hibiki.
It was the Konoha Eleven, though missing a certain Uzumaki Naruto in their ranks. They backed off, trying to think of another strategy to make the two bite the dust. It seemed that both Hibiki and Hitomi have had so many battle experiences, enabling them to move and attack with perfect sync. They were waiting for the moments where they can counter each and every attack that followed them.
Suddenly Hibiki’s right arm throbbed, prompting him to clutch it in pain. Even his head felt numb and hollow, with his senses becoming extremely dull and useless. He fell face-first to the ground, surprising his opponents and most importantly, Hitomi.
They all surrounded his broken body, concerned about his wellbeing. Sakura and Ino both inspected Hibiki for unseen wounds and bruises, yet instantly recoiled as they witnessed the Curse Seal spread from his right palm to the right side of the body. Even Hitomi was in the verge of tears as she remembered the day Hibiki went rogue against them in the hotel. Sakura warned the others to retreat, while Hinata and Neji used their Byakugan to assess their situation.
Hibiki’s chakra system was in ruins, with blue chakra mixing with the corruptive black chakra, filling in the nodes with evil. His body was still rigid, yet he continued to grasp his right arm, which was already writhing grotesquely. His head fleeted with various memories, fragments of the battles he’s been through, and even the encounter against Tobi. He let out a deep roar of suffering, making the earth quake and the winds blow madly.
“Shit,” Sakura said, apparently worried that they might have to fight Hibiki yet again. The surroundings became humid and her sight was reducing rapidly. “We have to get out of here! Everyone, scram! Alert the Lady Hokage!”
But even before they could make a move, Hibiki was already on his feet, the Cursed Mark consuming him totally and causing Hitomi to bawl at the horrific scene. He was about to proceed in attacking them, but disappeared in clouds of smoke without further notice.
“That technique,” Sakura breathed, remembering how a similar Cursed Mark consumed her beloved Sasuke. “It can’t be that Orochimaru gave it to him, can it?”
“His chakra signature vanished completely,” Neji interjected, profusely sweating at the sight of Hibiki’s transformation. “He seems to have been summoned somewhere far from here.”
“Impossible,” Hitomi responded, her face streaked with tears, looking to each of Konoha Eleven’s faces. “Hibiki and I only swore allegiance to each other, and no one else!”
“What a drag,” Shikamaru announced, simply bugged by the commotion. He saw several eagles pass above them. “The time has come, everyone. Go home and freshen up, then we will all meet at the venue. Let’s go!”
Hitomi was supported by Hinata and Sakura on the way back to the village, still thinking of what just happened to her Hibiki.
Tired of the usual guarding routine, Rouzuke went down to the basement to observe the numerous White Zetsus scattered below the large Hashirama living clone. He was surprised to see that Tobi and Kabuto were already there, with a man being fused to the stem-like appendage. He decided to include himself in the conversation.
“Ah, speak of the devil,” Kabuto began as he noticed Rouzuke approach their position. Even Tobi turned around. “Perfect timing too! You’ll learn how our plan will go.”
“Who is that man you’re putting into the tree?” Rouzuke ignored the greeting, still focused on the Hashirama tree. “And what of your stupid plan?”
“He is the only living shinobi that was infused with the First Hokage’s cells,” Kabuto explained, amused with Rouzuke’s ignorance. “I have failed to capture Uzumaki Naruto in that damned turtle island, and instead I came back with this Wood Release user.”
“So, you’re saying that with this guy, my Zetsu clones will be stronger?” Tobi interrupted, annoyed at being ignored by the two. “And you’ve even brought that woman into my lair.”
“Don’t worry,” Kabuto responded. “Your clones will be able to withstand harsh attacks. Remember, my Impure World Resurrection army will aid you. And also, I still need Mitarashi Anko’s body, as Lord Orochimaru’s chakra still resides in her.”
“Whatever,” Tobi said, still unconvinced with Kabuto’s explanations. He returned to Rouzuke. “I expect your full and utmost cooperation, Momura Rouzuke. I will not tolerate failure. That is all.”
He vanished without further ado, leaving Kabuto and Rouzuke to stare at each other. The latter activated his Cursed Seal of Hell, bit his left thumb, smeared blood on his right arm and wove seals for a Summoning Technique, catching a retreating Kabuto off-guard. Smoke emanated from the spot where Rouzuke slammed his palm onto.
“What are you playing at?” Kabuto demanded, apparently getting the wrong idea. “Are you trying to betray our trust?”
The puffs of smoke cleared, and Hibiki in his Cursed Form surfaced. Kabuto didn’t know how to react, seeing that his master’s seal just appeared right in front of him. He finally eyed the two with fascination.
“I can feel Lord Orochimaru’s chakra circulating within you,” Kabuto broke off, still smiling with glee at his new discovery. “With both of you on our side, we can change this world!”
“I have no intention of changing anything,” Rouzuke pressed on. “I merely joined the farce in return of being led to the greatest place to forge my next masterpiece.”
“I have no idea of what you’re talking about,” Kabuto retorted. He summoned the former Akatsuki members, previous jinchuriki, Kage and famous shinobi: Hizashi Hyuga, Dan Kato, Asuma Sarutobi, Hanzo, Chiyo, Kimimaro,Zabuza Momochi, Haku, Gari, Pakura, Chukichi, Shin and Toroi; all of which came from the coffins. “But it looks like our war is about to start.”
Tobi reappeared, bringing them the news that the opposition was already on the move. He sent out the White Zetsu Army, while telling Kabuto to do his work. He faced Rouzuke and ordered him to guard Sasuke at all costs, ignoring Hibiki’s presence. After issuing the instructions, he declared that the war has already begun.
