The 3 Generation style is basically, where the main character has to surpass or carries the will of 2 other people from previous generations, and these generations do not have to be one after the another.
Prime Examples :
NARUTO
Naruto , carrying Hashirama's will and Rikudou's.
See he is responsible for finishing the work of the Rikudou and Hashirama and must surpass them.
ONE PIECE
Luffy, has to surpass Dragon and Roger
(Most of you will say not Dragon... but sadly you will see it is true)
Luffy must finish Dragon's work against the W.G and become the Pirate King that Roger once was.
Legend of Korra
Korra, has to surpass Aang and Wan
Korra must finish Aang and Wan's work in uniting the world and forming peace that the latter failed.
You will of course have many other examples you can look at, but I have noticed this is a common style used in most of the mangas.
