I had the idea for this thread around my birthday. I was talking to a few friends from Uni and mentioned, in passing, how weird it was that I have known some of the people here on NB for many more years than I have known them. A lot of us active members in the RP have been on-and-off for some of the time that we have been here, but the years of active membership accumulate and at some point we are struck by the realization that this website has been a part of our everyday routine for a significant part of our lives.
I am 22 years old, doing my second year of Uni. I registered on NB during the 9th grade, sitting in my room at the boarding school I was attending that year. A few days later I recommended the site to one of the guys next door and that was how ZeroGarra (yes, with two r's instead of a's) and Gobi Gobletsson arrived on NarutoBase. We spent days posting one-word replies in the chatterbox to get our Rank to a point where we could start learning serious techniques. When the school took us skiing in Norway we spent the nights making stupid customs that never got approved. It was fun and the experience only became better as I slowly got to know the people here. Messenger was the go-to communications medium at that time and it was on there and in the 'general chat' of Iwagakure that I met some of the people that I still know to this day. Sure, some of the relationships were brief and some have been sporadic due to inactivity on both my part and theirs. Still, I treasure the people I have got to know here and I hope that I have been just as good to all of you as you have been to me.
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that NarutoBase is something that you love to hate and hate to love. We complain, we go inactive, we act petty in fights and we roast one another in the general Skype chat as well as the RP Chat thread. Despite all that I like to think that we all have a certain amount of respect for each other and appreciate the camaraderie as we discuss everything from customs (which no one in real life would be interested in) to stuff happening in our lives. I do not think the positive effects of just talking to one another and forging these relationships can be overstated. I know that I, personally, have been very grateful for my time here, despite the bumps in the road. Seven years, or close to it, amounts to nearly a third of my life. When I first started making threads complaining about the OP oldies, with their CEs and chummy attitude to teaching each other more OP stuff I never imagined that I would end up being a part of that group. In 2010 only 2 years separated the old from the new. Today that number can be 9 years in extremis. Crazy, right?
If any new members are reading this I can only recommend that you join an active Village, but in lieu of that just join the Skype Chat. It is a bit of a taboo to mention on NB, since the Staff, naturally, does not want to divert traffic from the site, but it is the best place to really 'meet' the people you will be trained by, do battle with and RP alongside in this chaotic RP of ours. The site might seem a bit dead sometimes, but in the same way the Staff refers to work being done 'behind the scenes' there is always chatter going on in the chats. Do not be afraid to ask any of us oldies for some help. Making friends here is the best way to make the long wait worthwhile. Things progress slowly on NB, but it is infinitely better to have someone in the waiting room with you than to be alone. A lot of people stop by just to chat, even if they do not really RP actively.
To the rest of us, the ones who have spend years here and continue to do so, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for investing all that blood, sweat and tears in this site. You are part of the very diverse movement of people that keep the RP going... and if you ever happen to land in Denmark just shoot me a message. I would be happy to share a beer with another NB'er.
This thread is a forum for those who want to say 'thank you.' To NB, to other members, to the Staff; it does not matter. We are all here together. Some of us go inactive, some of us come back, but all of us have been a part of this site and all of us have something to say 'thank you' for.
Personally, I would like to say thank you to every single one of you, young and old, active and inactive. Thank you for letting me continue to experience this site that I both love to hate and hate to love.
