Simply put, Kishi needed a third ninja for team Guy. He already had two males (Lee and Neji) so he created a female Tenten. However he really had no need for her in terms of plot and therefore never developed her character.

Well, while in the manga we barely know anything about her, in the anime she was developed much more.
Still a disposable character w/o importance for the main plot, whose only purpose is to complete team Guy

It was filling the spot of "girl" in Team Gai since ninja tree man cells are consisting of 3 people.
It might also be for balancing out relevancy ratio in other teams (team Kurenai and Asuma), Gai sensei is more relevant than other senseis (Asuma and Kurenai); Lee and Neji got backstory and development more than other k11 (asides from main cast-still they got more than Sakura-), team 8 did not get much characterization other than Hinata, Ino-Shika-Cho got more them others but as far as part 1 goes; they were around the same level of paneltime with others.

- Her speciality is a two-stage attack using exploding tags. She now uses more weapons than ever before.
- She uses her weapons to hold off her enemies, then works in perfect sychronisation with Lee and Neji to corner them.
- One of her most important roles in the team is to keep Gai and Lee focused, because who knows where they'd end up if they're not concentrating.


She polishes and sharpens her weapons every day to be as sharp and deadly as possible, and it shows. Even Akatsuki were caught off-guard by the variety of weapons that Tenten brought into battle! But that's not all Tenten does. Her calm demeanour and focus guide the team through their missions, and when it's battle time, her long-range attacks allow her team to take the initiative. If Tenten weren't there, none of her other team members would be able to use their own ability to the fullest. For Team Gai, where each individual member is already extremely strong, Tenten is the vital element that cements them together.

Yes one of the rare kunoichi who did more than sucking up to a male; she said she wanted to be strong like Tsunade the first day he became a genin when Sakura was dying her hair and did not even know who the **** Tsunade is.

Even still, it just goes to show how hard Sakura trained and improved to have far surpassed Tenten's level when she was nothing but a mere fodder in comparison. Although it is the same with all members of Team 7.

It's arguable Itachi and Sasuke are superior with weapons

Maybe that is the reason; she rivals herself to people who are associated with her goals; sort of how Lee who was working on taijutsu rivaled himself to the guy who was genius of the strongest taijutsu style of leaf; or how Naruto who got no acknowledgement or praise in skills rivaled himself to Sasuke who was opposite.

Even still, it just goes to show how hard Sakura trained and improved to have far surpassed Tenten's level when she was nothing but a mere fodder in comparison. Although it is the same with all members of Team 7.

It is nice that Sakura improved and all; but Tenten needs some love :T_T:

opponent for Neji and Lee, has pride in attacking with her magnificent weapons.
Her real power is being recognized by her two teammates, but she sometimes shows
a carefree smiling face, though she has what may be the greatest and strongest
weapons arsenal.

Tenten's aim is to become a strong ninja like the "Legendary Kunoichi", Tsunade.
As the legendary Tsunade has become the Fifth Hokage, her daily training has
become more fervent than ever before!
