Yui used many tools as research points for the Eva-project. One of these was a collection of DVDs released shortly before her death, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. After abandoning Shinji, Gendo sends his son the dvds. Shinji is raised on the morals of Team Dai-Gurren and the MANLY GAR Kamina. The Shinji who arrives in Tokyo-3 is vastly different; He quotes Gurren Lagann, wears Kamina's shades, and is the most manliest fourteen year old in the universe.
The second Gendo introduces him to Eva-01, Shinji tearfully thanks his father for granting his greatest wish, that of owning a giant robot. He concludes that Gendo gave him the Gurren set to prepare him for piloting the Evangelion. He zones out during Dr. Akagi's explanation of how to pilot Eva-01.
When Sachael attack, Shinji rises to meet him in MANLY BATTLE!!! Initially getting a 10% Synch ratio, he forces his MANLY FLAMES to explode, forcing a 100% Synch ratio and wrecks Sachael's shit.
Shinji will go throughout the series acting mainly like Kamina, but it's pretty clear he still has confidence issues. He and Gendo have a better relationship in this story, due to Shinji's undying faith in his father. Shinji tries to get Rei to be more expressive, which fails, and continuously angers Asuka. Shinji will most likely be paired with Mana.
Also, he believes that the AT-field is just like Spiral Energy, and uses it to attack the Angels, to everyone's confusion.
Shinji finds pride in Humanity's attempt at the Jet Alone project, and throws in his support for both it and a mass production of Military Evangelions.
