A teenager has been shot dead by a policewoman who thought his Nintendo Wii controller was a gun.

Officers visited 17-year-old Christopher Roupe's home to serve a warrant on his father over a probation violation.

But when the teenager opened the door to let them in, an officer shot him in the chest at point blank range.

Police claimed he was holding a gun, while witnesses and the family said it was a Wii controller.

The family’s solicitor, Cole Law, said the youngster was about to watch a movie using his console.

Mr Cole went on: “The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand.

“He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest.

“It just doesn't add up.”

Referring to the teenager having a gun in his hand, Mr Cole added: “We don't know where that statement came from.”

Police have refused to confirm if any weapon was found at the scene following the shooting in Euharlee, Georgia - about 50 miles north west of Atlanta.

Neighbour Ken Yates told how he saw the officer immediately after Christopher was killed and described her as being visibly distraught.

He said: "This is tragic. She came out of this house. She put her head in her hands and she was sobbing.

“Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighbourhood buddies.”

Tia Howard, another neighbour, also arrived at the house immediately after the shooting and said: "There was a Wii remote in his hand and [the officer] shot him.”

Officials refused to disclose if a weapon was found on the scene after the shooting last Friday.

The case has been turned over the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Christopher was a student at Woodland High School in nearby Cartersville and was an active member of the school's Reserve Officers' Training Corps program.

His family and friends described him as a “nice young man” who always looked out for his friends.

Friend William Corson said: “He was a good kid. He always hung out with me and he took up for me."

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on leave as the investigation into the shooting continues.

Once complete, the findings will be handed over to the office of District Attorney Rosemary Greene, who will decide what action should be taken.

Police directed all calls to the Bureau of Investigation, which failed to respond.

Christopher’s funeral is planned for tomorrow.

That's a shame. Not all police officers are bad, and not all accidents are malicious. Seems like this officer genuinely made a mistake and blames herself. Unfortunate situation all around.

I know she didn't mean to do that, but wow officers need to be careful and think about the other person's perspective when doing these types of searches. You should always be ready to protect, not kill.

How in the hell do you mistake a hand gun for a wii controller.. thats just stupid.. this guy just clearly wanted to shoot someone :|
Obviously you didn't read the story which states it was a female officer, who was seen sobbing with her head in her hands afterwards. Not all accidents involving police add up to them being bad people.

I hear this kind of thing far too often these days. It really is sad. Wii Motes look NOTHING like a gun. Not even remotely. This officer had a huge chip on her shoulder and made a very hastey and bad decision.

So if the Father answered the door would she have shot him point blank? Sad....Truly sad.

my heart goes out to the family.

Seems a little far-fetched to me. -- edit: Farfetched because a neighbor was talking about a BB gun game tournament thing, and he was part of a military program for officers (ROTC)

I don't believe she should be punished. Barred from any sort of police/guard work and restricted from access to weapons, yes.

Her actions were not calculated or pre-meditated. She probably will not go to jail.

The reason I don't think she should be punished is simply because the face of that boy looking at her in shock as the life passes from his eyes will haunt her for the rest of her life.

How the hell could you possibly mistake a wii remote control as a gun? What kind of ludicrous excuse is this?
I hope they charge that officer severely, she deserves it.

Theory:
Maybe they're just saying it was a Wii remote to get money out of the state.
It's a horrible thing to say, but its not something that's impossible for people to do.
I mean, I know people with warrants for their arrest, and have had them for several years, and no officers have come to their door looking for them. Which means the father might have had a decently serious crime on his hands. Not felony, but certainly enough to get a cop to look for him.

My point: The father might be the type of person that would exploit his son's death to get more money out of the state :/

That's true but then why would all of the witnesses say it was just a controller...would at least one be honest if that was the case?

that's just one part that doesn't add up. If she sbot the kid point blank as he opened the door, why was she ready to fire in the 1st place? I thought the purpose of the visit was to serve a warrant. Was the father dangerous? Was he even home? Did dispatch tell her that the suspect was armed and dangerous?

You are right, a number of things don't add up. It's clear by her reported actions that she didn't mean to kill the kid, but this also doesn't mean she is a good person either. Again I ask what would have happened if the father answered the door? Would he have been shot? There is so much that needs to be investigated before judgment can be passed either way.

Well

“Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighbourhood buddies.”
I'm not saying it's for sure this, but at least one person mentions a BB gun, and it's not the officer.

Though he says "Supposedly" the whole thing smells fishy to me.
