This feels more like an insanity plea than what actually happened.
1. He was an honor student meaning he knew the disciple of work and has a good comprehension.
2. He was an artist meaning he had mean in which to express his emotions and had patience.
There's obviously more to the story. People like that don't just go off kill their families for little reasons like that. There was probably something darker going on.
