A US teen who made a "sarcastic joke" on Facebook about shooting up a school full of students could spend eight years in jail after authorities deemed the comment a terroristic theat.

Texas student Justin Carter was 18 years old in February when he got into an argument on the social media site over the PC game "League of Legends", KHOU reports. According to his father, Justin was taunted by another Facebook user who said he was "insane" and "messed up in the head". "[Justin] replied, 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head. I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still beating hearts'," Jack Carter told the TV station. Mr Carter said the alarming comment was meant in jest and was followed by the words "lol" and "jk", acronyms for "laughing out loud" and "just kidding". But Justin was jailed in March after a Canadian woman saw the post and found the teen's location on Google before reporting him to police.

US authorities didn't see the funny side of Justin Carter's 'sarcastic joke'.

Local police said the threat, which came just months after the Sandy Hook massacre in December 2012, was taken seriously. He was charged with making a terroristic threat and now faces up to eight years in jail.
Jack Carter is warning other parents about the dangers of social media comments saying they "can and will be used against you". "These people are serious. They really want my son to go away to jail for a sarcastic comment that he made." A hearing on the case is scheduled for July 1.

So, is this a little harsh or did he get what he deserved?

I think, personally he got what he deserved (if he ends up going to jail), killing people isn't someting that should be 'joked' about.

No reason? Threatening to kill innocent people over a LoL game (whether it was a joke or not) is wrong, and he should be punished. 8 years might be little harsh, but idc.
LOL don't be stupid. Was the joke a little insensitive? Yes. But going to jail for even a year is pretty harsh for something that had no malicious intent behind it. Don't tell me you've never gotten so mad at someone you yelled "I'll kill you" or something like that. The legal system is a joke.

Omg, are you serious?
Your going to send a kid to jail for that comment?
Is that really necessary?
That straight bs, obviously the kid was joking whether it was funny or not.
You don't just go locking people up for that.
