I would like to discuss about tattoos with you all.

I understand some of you may not have any tattoos (yet?) but to those who do, and yes it also applies to those who don't have any ... Do you consider having tattoos a sin and something of tarnish? Or do you think of them as of art and something with meaning? Do you consider them not a sin?

I remember when I was in my early teens I said I would never contaminate my body with tattoos, although that later changed when I joined the USMC. I'd say less than 1/4 of the reason I got tattoos were because of everyone else having one, I wanted to be the same, but majority was because I found things in life that I wanted to continue to remember. Having a tattoo that reminded me of something had meaning to me, in a way it was also art. I didn't think of it being a reckoning, a sin.

Now, I don't want to be covered (mind you we have tattoo policies in the USMC) but regardless I enjoy them. I still have tattoos I want to get, a couple more.

My mother told me that having tattoos you are sought out after a lot more, now that may sound good, but really how she implied it was that it looks demeaning and that say legal matters are attracted to you, aka police, it looks bad and unprofessional. I get that. I will never get forearm, neck, face tattoos. I also made it clear to myself I will never get tattoos below the chest and downward (besides my ribcage, which I have some words written there).

Literally and to be quite frank, what are your opinions on tattoos NB? I would love to discuss your thoughts!

Meaning is subjective, their isn't a definitive answer. Either you like them or you don't. Up to you.

Although to give my opinion I wouldn't get one. Have no reason to.

You say that now, but do you see yourself in the latter getting one? Or is it unclear?

I don't like to have one.. because it's painful. And I have low tolerance of pain. I see it as a form of art... but not just too overly like covering all the skin and such. I also think that it's sexy and badass. LOL. But for many cases, some tattoos are related to drug addicts, convicts, etc. and are not legal in work - example if it's a business sector, esp. if it's really visible.

"Sin" is such a stupid word imo.

No, I don't think that tattoos are a bad thing. Sure, it depends on what kind of tattoo you get. Smileys, coffee cups, guns, gang-stuff etc. are probably not the most well-conceived ones, but tattoos can be very amazing pieces of art, as well as emotional memorials. It just depends on the tattoo itself. I prefer tattoos that have a special meaning.

I have one tattoo myself so far. The birth-date of my deceased father on my lower arm. I'll get similar ones for my mother and sister as well someday in the future. But before that, I'm going to get the paw prints of my beloved cat, one on each lower arm in the next few months. I'm also thinking about getting one for my best friend, since we know each other our entire lives basically and have gone through many hardships. Yet we are like siblings.

Of course not everyone likes tattoos. That's fine. As fine as the fact that not everyone likes coffee, meat or pop music. It's all about preferences.

No because it's permanent, and whether I would be interested in one would depend on my mood which always changes.

Society doesn't frown upon them so much as they did before, but I think neck tattoos/face ones are.

I'd get one and will likely get one once i finish my apprenticeship and move out.One to remind me of hey congrats you learnt a trade that you love and got through all the bullshit that apprentices are put through in hospitality and any others i have will be to mean something to me. a semicolon on my left wrist or the yin yang would be the others i would get at such time. both would mean something to me and are true.Never get any tattoos just because they "look cool" they are permanent and should mean something.

As long as it has a meaning behind it and not just for show then it's alright.

Well, I have some flower tattoos, and tattoos are pretty common where I live, so they don't surprise anyone. Sometimes people ask me whether getting one hurts or not, but things like "it's a sin/it's not normal" come up very, very rarely. Sure, if you want to get one, you should go to a professional salon, and then take proper care of it; honestly I see nothing wrong with having a tattoo for aesthetics only, as long as you really understand that you'll have it for life.

I just love these question threads on NB. Always asking something obvious, always people bother to reply. :coffee:

Come to New Zealand. So many people have tattoos. A lot of them have cultural significance. Some people have them because they just like them. There's nothing wrong with them tbh, it's all dependent on your own tastes and preferences that I believe a person should decide themselves.

I won't get a tattoo. You wouldn't put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari, would you? ;)

When I was in high school my friend and I did tattoos for underage kids to varying degrees of quality. When I was in my early 20s, they were really looked down upon and considered "trashy." For whatever reasons they are back in style; maybe it was the resurgence of hipsters with their ear gauges, dapper beards, and tattoos. While many religions consider it to be improper to mark one's body I wouldn't go as far to call it a sin. And if it was a sin, it would be a very minor one at that.

If you want a tattoo I'd make sure it's something that you'd like seeing on your body at 45 when you pick up your children from school. I would also highly recommend saving up the money and getting a high quality one.

There are many African tribes that wear tattoos for various reasons, Indian tribes used to do the same thing. Tattoos should have meaning, but it's your choice what you do with your body. I have one tattoo on my right deltoid, it's a memorial to my grandma who passed away. I've always said I'd get more, but I just don't have anything that important to get, and I'm not one to get a tat for the hell of it. I also think tattoos feel amazing!! I fell asleep a couple times from the vigorous vibration and the relaxing sensation I got from it. Do what you want, who cares what other people think.

What exactly does it mean to "sin"?

As far as I know everyone if free to do as they wish
What one considers normal others consider it a sin in this case
I like tattoos, I saw a lot of good ones and I think they are a form of art, and for some people are a reminder of someone they love, or of an important stage in their life, or something really big for them
If that's how they chose to remember that I don't see the problem, some people write it in their diary others on tattoo them on their arm, it's that simple
I do not have a tattoo and that's because I have not found something important enough to have it forever on me, but If I do someday I might get one, or I might not get one, either way the impact will be only on me so I don't see why other people might want to say if wrong or not, at the end of the day it's my body, not theirs

I don't see how this is a sin, it can look cool depending on the tattoo.
