Name: Tankun | Nickname: Sand Monk | Gender: Male | Age: 27 | Clan: None

Looks: Tankun is a slender man of moderate height. His hair is a sandy blonde with a good amount of length reaching his mid-back. His hair breaks off into spikes in a manner that aims to replicate the tail of the Ichibi. Blue tattoos line his face and body, particular around his black and yellow eyes. During his travels he wears an orange robe with black lining and a thick red sash. His legs are covered by black pants with tape wrapped around his shins. He wears a standard pair of sandals on his feet and often sports a rice hat with several decorative tags hanging from the brim. While in battle he sometimes wears a white and orange porcelain Tanuki mask in the style of other ANBU ninja.

Personality: Much like Tanuki who raised him, Tankun is not a serious man. He is often aloof, drinking sake, or tricking others for humor or to take something he wants. As he was raised outside of human civilization he is ignorant of many customs and morals which can get him into some trouble.

The One-Tailed Beast, Shukaku

Info: The One-Tail ( 一尾, Ichibi ) is a tailed beast that was sealed within Gaara of Sunagakure. It has been captured by Deidara (and Tobi), then extracted and sealed by Akatsuki. Citizens of Sunagakure believed that Shukaku (守鶴, Shukaku) was a living ghost of a corrupted Suna priest, and was originally sealed inside a tea kettle. Shukaku had two Jinchuuriki in the past, one of which inspired the Third Kazekage to create the Iron Sand technique. The Fourth Kazekage ordered Chiyo to seal Shukaku into Gaara during his birth, which led to the death of his mother. Shukaku is a sand-colored tanuki, with black-blueish markings all over its face, body, and tail, and a jagged, concave mouth. The sclera of its eyes are black, containing yellow irides with pupils that each takes the shape of a black four-pointed star with four black dots around it. Having become sealed within Tankun, who was raised by the Tanuki, his current host has taken to calling him "Tankami", a result of Shukaku's deity status among animal community.

Abilities:
  • Like all tailed beasts, Shukaku has an enormous supply of chakra compared to most ninja. However, it does not have as much as the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, gaining +100 chakra.
  • Whenever Shukaku is sealed into its jinchuuriki, it has the ability to eat away its host's personality and influence him or her with its bloodlust behavior whenever he or she sleeps, which leads its host to develop insomnia. Host can use the sand in his gourd to take on the form of a miniature Shukaku, or even create a giant copy of Shukaku's body.
  • Complete mastery over the Sand and Wind elements, both in human form and tailed beast forms, without the use of any handseals. This includes a dynamic shield of sand that protects the host automatically. Host also gains a passive +20 to his Sand jutsu due to his Magnetism Release ability.

Background Info

History: Tankun was not born to that name. He was born to a fairly average family in a small desert town on the outskirts of Sunagakure. Before his first memory the town was met with destruction. During a failed transfer of Shukaku to a new host the beast was set free and went on a rampage. His town was utterly destroyed in Shukaku's rage. Following the attack a group of Tanuki visited the site, as they often do after the appearance of their chosen deity. While searching the rubble they were unable to find a single survivor, aside from a small infant who had been untouched by the destruction. That boy was Tankun.

With the town destroyed and his family dead, the Tanuki took the child with them. They saw his survival as a sign of holiness and believed that Tankun must have some connection to the tailed beast. They brought Tankun back to their home land, Hachi-takioashisu, the Eight Falls Oasis. It is here that Tankun was raised, as well as worshiped. Being raised in such a manner, in a place such as the Eight Falls, by beings such as the Tanuki, comes with its perks. It is a life of luxury, filled with pampering, sake and fun. It also brings with it the opportunity to travel the world. Each time their God appeared, the Tanuki would go on a pilgrimage to that location. This typically was to other areas of Suna, but every once in a while Shukaku would rampage elsewhere.

It is on these journeys that Tankun was exposed to the world of Shinobi. Taking an interest in the ninja arts, he began befriending and training under a number of talented ninja. He quickly learned the arts and became a talented fighter in his own right. Along this path he also discovered a latent talent passed down from his parents, the ability to manipulate sand. This ability only furthered his divinity in the eyes of the Tanuki as it was the power of their God. As could be expected, these pilgrimages often led to Tankun crossing paths with Gaara, the former Jinchuuriki of the One-Tailed Beast. As the vessel to their God, the Tanuki worshiped Gaara as though he were Shukaku himself. Gaara, however, rebuffed this worship as he had long viewed the beast as a curse. While he hid his feelings, Tankun had grown to resent Gaara for both eclipsing his status within the Tanuki, and rejecting that adoration. Thus Tankun had decided that he would one day take Shukaku from Gaara and become its rightful vessel.

It is this darkness which allowed Tankun to fall into the hands of Shimura Danzo. After the Chunin Exams when Gaara released Shukaku, Tankun and the Tanuki visited the leaf on one of their usual pilgrimages. It was here that Tankun was approached by the Konoha elder and promised the power to take what he desired. Tankun had grown bored of his life and saw an opportunity to expand his horizons. He spoke with his adoptive family and convinced them to let him stay for some time. Tankun continued to develop his power within the remnants of a now shattered Root. He had more freedom than most members and was somewhat of a wildcard, acting of his own will from time to time rather than a strict adherence to Danzo's word.

His plan of using Danzo to gain the Ichibi was put to rest during a recent war that took place in the village. During this war, Danzo was gravely injured leaving the deal unfulfilled. But as one door closed, another opened. Rumor spread throughout the ninja world that some mysterious man offered to grant the wishes of those who brought him the head of powerful individuals. Tankun set out in search of a target, journeying with his friend Rocket to the Blood Tavern, a place rife with missing-ninja who had high bounties on their head. At the Tavern he met a Noldor who wanted to tag along, and the bartender had given Rocket information that people had gathered on Taro Island. Just as they were about to set off a man ambushed the pair. Before they knew what had hit them, the man's powerful magic had dispatched them from this earthly world.

Tankun was surrounded by darkness. He didn't know how much time had passed, but at some point he started to hear a voice. It started off faint, but grew louder and louder. A large figure began to take form before him. He recognized it immediately as Shukaku. The voice suddenly roared a single word, "live", and Tankun awoke. He was back in Konoha. Rocket was gone, but he didn't feel alone. There was something, someone, with him. He closed his eyes and focused on that feeling. When he opened his eyes he was in some large chamber with sand beneath his feet. Standing before him was Shukaku. Neither was sure how it had happened, or why, but the One-Tailed beast had found its way inside Tankun. He had finally become Shukaku's host.

The duo had little time to acclimate to each other before danger found them. A man named Hades was the first to come, and he was a powerful foe indeed. The battle was evenly matched and the opponent was able to withstand the Jinchuriki's onslaught. During the battle when it seemed to be lost, Shukaku revealed to Tankun that he had chosen Tankun for his vessel because he saw strength in the Sand Monk. Bolstered by this vote of confidence, Tankun attempted to defeat Hades using his own power rather than using the beast's strength. This, however, proved to be his downfall. He became overconfident and despite Shukaku's beckoning to be released, Tankun refused and was overpowered. The defeat was difficult, but it taught the two valuable lesson. They needed to work together.

Other

Scorpio: Specialized gourd used by Tankun during battle.
(Sukopion) - Scorpio
Type: Weapon
Rank: S
Range: Short
Chakra: N/A
Damaga: N/A
Description: Scorpio was developed as a weapon for sand users to replace the typical gourd of sand seen used by people such as Gaara. While the gourd itself was useful, it had little value beyond being a simple container for the sand inside. The Scorpio on the other hand was developed to not only carry sand, but to be a useful tool in battle. The shape is designed after the tail of a scorpion, with numerous segments which end with a stinger-like head. The segments are each composed of dozens of hand-sized "scales" which each are hollow, sharply edged and filled with sand. These scales are loosely bound and designed in a way that allows the user to release them at will. In close quarters combat, this allows the user to swing the tail for attacks and defense by controlling the sand inside with hand movements. The scales carry an inherent A-rank durability. The head segment of Scorpio has a nozzle where a scorpion's tail would have its stinger. This is where the sand inside is commonly released from, though it can also be released from between the scales for quicker access. In terms of abilities, the Scorpio has several.
  • An A-ranked highly compressed stream of sand can be fired from the nozzle reaching up to long range.
  • The scales can be released along with sand to swirl violently around a target. This can be used as an A-ranked attack up to mid-range by having the scales slice up the target, or as an omnidirectional shield around the user.
  • The user can use the sand within the tail to extend its reach momentarily, similar to Renji extending Zabimaru, for quick B-rank strikes up to mid range.
  • The strongest attack allows the user to release all of the sand from the nozzle of Scorpio in the form of a violent tornado. The tornado can be made directly from the nozzle and extend up to long range in any direction the user wants (horizontal, diagonal, vertical, etc.) or, they can stab the nozzle into the ground and have the tornado form from directly below the target. The tornado is S-ranked in strength and can be used twice, requiring the weapon to be replenished after each usage.
To replenish the interior of the weapon with sand the user can stab the nozzle into the ground and draw in sand (directly drawing in sand, or converting earth into sand). Because of the size of the weapon, it can be a bit cumbersome to the wielder. While wearing it they lose speed equivalent to one rank, though this penalty can be removed by devoting 15 chakra per turn towards supporting the weapon through sand manipulation. As it could be an annoyance to carry a weapon of this size everywhere, the user can summon it from a scroll kept on their belt when needed. Due to the construction of the weapon its very difficult to fully destroy. Precision attacks can cause the tail to shatter, and destroy a couple of scales, but it can simply be reformed the following turn.
-Simplified appearance: Fairy Tail's Scorpio tail x Shukaku's tail
-All abilities (aside from freeform CQC) count as a move in the user's turn and follow the standard rank/chakra cost/damage guidelines. Each has a one-turn cooldown.
-Loss of speed of one rank, or loss of 15 chakra per turn while wearing.
-Can only be used by sand users.

Weapons: Tankun carries the traditional assortment of ninja tools within pouches sewn into his robe. This allows him quick access to items such as kunai, shuriken, paper tags, smoke bombs, etc. On his back he carries both a long staff, which he is proficient in battle with, and a metallic shield that was given to him during his travels.

The Will of Darkness: While not a traditional adherence to this Will, Tankun has fallen under the wing of its creator Danzo Shimura. He has taken the aggressive approach to village defense, but views it from a practicality point of view rather then a strong belief.
