But you should understand that terrorists do not follow Islam. They follow some twisted political ideology.
Terrorism is a tactic.
The Taliban are akin go the Mafia, Yakuza, or KGB in the post-soviet block.
Of course, one must recognize that Islam is very open to exploitation by these 'mafia' political structures. It was a religion designed under the concept of regional conquest.
Christianity is not immune to it, either - but the advent of the printing press and widespread literacy pretty much shattered the rigid structure of the Catholic Church and the control it had over interpretation of the scriptures.
The Koran did not fare so well. Even in the more enlightened cultures, women are considered second rate citizens and the entire setup is prone to authoritarian power structures due to the emphasis on submission and the context that human lives are akin to tools for God.
Though there isn't much guidance on how a tool is to figure out what it is supposed to do for God... which is why organizations like the Taliban can so easily use the religion to convince people to blow themselves up. They're suffering, pissed, and told that some unholy people are to blame. They don't have to spell it out - the context fills in all of the blanks.
That isn't to say that every muslim believes in using violence or condones the acts of terrorism perpetrated by the populous in the troubled regions.
Kobak, your region (if I am correct), has an interesting history with the Orthodox Christians and the Ottoman Muslims. Christians lived peacefully within the Ottoman empire for quite some time. Sure, they weren't allowed to own/ride horses, and were second-rate - but they weren't exterminated or forced to convert (though marriages across ethnic or religious lines got interesting, particularly with the Catholic Church expanding from Italy).
Of course, the Ottomans were doing the exact same thing the U.S. is doing, now... and they went broke. Then you had Mustafa and all kinds of fun with the formation of Bosnia-Herzegovina. God Forbid farmers sell their crops before they rot awaiting tax appraisal.
I believe that sets the appropriate context for Islam and how the chips ultimately fall when a society is built around it.
When I was in the UAE - foreigners were given a sort of stay of punishment for violating Sharia Law. Unless you just went out of your way to taunt them. Coin speaks louder than scripture (in both good and bad ways). That said - they'd nail their citizens for it, and many of the contract workers from third world nations would simply be deported.
We (Americans, British, Russians) were tolerated because we had the 'high ground' and were dealing with people who valued mercantile pursuits over piety.
My dealings with U.S. Muslims, while never threatening, have indicated a certain blindness to the vulnerabilities of their own religion.
At least in our society, we have Nazism and the Crusades shoved in our face so routinely that we are used to the idea that our religion has been utilized irresponsibly. Or Westboro 'baptists.' We read "The Crucible" as part of most high school literature courses (though I argue that it is not so much about the hazards of religious piety so much as the reality that people will manipulate authority to destroy each other... but that's a bit much to get people who have been indoctrinated into state-worship for ten years of their life to understand). We're told of the witch hunts and the book burnings. Pretty much - we're told that if we were raised Christian, we're fundamentally evil and should hang ourselves by the tentacles of the spaghetti monster.
So we kind of get used to the idea that flawed ideology exists in our religion.
Try having that conversation with a U.S. Muslim - and all of a sudden we get reminded of the crusades, book burnings, the Muslim attempts to preserve the Roman accomplishments, etc.
*shrug*
Which is why I'm not really apt to let them off the hook for the behavior of their kin overseas. It doesn't help that a number of their mosques funnel money back over to these same organizations pledging to kill us and enslave the local populations of their countries to produce opium.
.... Of course, anymore, our federal government does that, too... so I feel like the continent I used to live on all of a sudden became an island.
At least Russia/Putin are consistent. I may not like their way of dealing with things... but you have a pretty good idea of how they are going to go about things when they get involved. We're a complete and total wildcard that you have to re-draw every 'turn' you have us in your hand.
