I was re-reading chapter 691 and I reached the scene where Sasuke attempts to finish Madara off and Hagoromo stops him, noting that Madara was already dying. Hagoromo then tells Sasuke to look at his predecessors final moments, and I thought it was just him being sentimental like most of the good guys, when it hit me, he was showing Sasuke the end result of his path he was showing Sasuke the likely outcome of what he sought to achieve. Anyone else agree with me?

This was pretty clear when this chapter was first released. The only reason I can think of that didn't make Sasuke change his mind is that he thought his plan was different and foolproof. The scene was both sentimental for Naruto and Sasuke but also a learning point for Sasuke.
