TBH It was more towards 20/30,000.

Still, he ran into the midst of tens of thousands of Chuunin + NInja and didn't get scratched...

İt was a single division, after the first day of the war, there were about 40.000 ninja left in whole allience, and not everyone in the allience were in that division. Madara beat fodders with no name; and whole division did not get whipped off with pure taijutsu. Just because Gai did not drop from the sky and owned bunch of fodders who are meant to be taken down by named characters, it does not mean he can't.

Hyuuga are definitly good, but they just don't stand up in large battles.
ON a 1v1, they win to most people who don't have Bijuu/ or op'd kekki genkai.
