[Discussion] Tablet or Laptop?

My younger brother is off to uni soon and me and my older brother want to get him a gift.

I was thinking of getting him an Ipad mini, Galaxy Tab or Galaxy Note but my brother thinks a laptop is better for note taking.

When I was in uni my prof had no problem with students using ipads or laptops but I know each teacher is different so what do you think is better for lectures/class? A tablet with a keyboard (lighter and more portable) or a laptop (heavier)?


I know a laptop is heaps better for regular use but I know how annoying it can be lugging it around campus with all my textbooks and stationary. With an Ipad Mini or any other tablet for that matter, he can carry it around easily and when he's catching the train back home he'll be more comfortable using a tablet than a laptop.

Anyways, enough of me rambling on. Thoughts?

Laptop. It has more uses then a tablet, plus tablets are sometimes hard to type on.

laptop, tablets kinda get slwo over time and with laptops you can change the hard drive and ram to give it more space and speed where as with tablets you cant do that

School use wise, Laptop with THINNESS and WEIGHT less than 1,5 kg and 20mm.
But i would choose a Galaxy Note 8.0 because it's lightweight and thin enough

If he already has a laptop or computer access to do his homeworks etc, I suggest you buy him the galaxy note 8.0 especially if he will only use it for taking notes and quick access to the internet while in class.

It's kind of redundant to buy him another laptop or a burden to carry another 5 lbs plus device, so tablet would be a better school companion. Now if you have extra money though and really want him to carry something more powerful than tablets but with less weight than regular laptops, I'd say get him the Macbook air or one of those windows ultrabooks.

Yeah, he's got a desktop at my parents house. He doesn't have a proper laptop, those small Dell laptops

Tablets are for wasting time and surfing the internet and easy to carry around. Laptops are for getting stuff done but not as portable as a tablet. If he is going to college give him a laptop for those 10 page reports.
