The symbolism is mostly concerned with the portraits and How Kishi uses them in the story.

Ironically, the biggest hint that SasuSaku was cannon was given in the first chapter itself when we saw the photo frame of Sasuke, Sakura and Sarada.

On first glance itself, an obvious reader would realize that the photo didn't fit together. After all, Hebi Sasuke and Wife Sakura would not go well together. Unless time travel was possible. :p

By the end of the first chapter, the photo frame's secret is exposed : It was photoshopped and had a hidden photo of team Hebi. And Kishi dropped his red herring there that SasuKarin was cannon (Many people fell for the bait).

Essentially the photo is a split photo of Sakura and team Hebi.

But, photos getting split apart as what happened above is not the only case scenario in the manga. Kishi has used the same device earlier in the war arc.

When Obito's team portrait gets shredded apart by the Juubi's power.

And when Sasuke's team portrait gets cut apart by his resolve to kill Naruto.

What's important in all three scenarios is that in the end the photo re-assembles itself all over again. It is symbolic of re-uniting broken bonds.

Obito's willpower causes his team photo to come together again.

And the aftermath of Naruto and Sasuke's fight once again brings together Team 7.

There is no photo of team 7, but the symbolism is there (Bottom Most Panel). This is the duster incident, the first time Team 7 came together.

Kishi stays true to this pattern in SasuSaku's case and once again brings the disjointed parts together (Without any splits) and makes them a complete whole. Thus, making the family portrait of Sasuke, Sakura and Sarada complete.

Note: This was the last page of Gaiden and it's colored, so Kishi wanted us to pay attention to the theme he had established.

I think if we take all the symbolism in consideration, SasuSaku was obvious.

This portrait pattern could be continued with Team Boruto in focus if a fallout occurs between Boruto and Mitsuki. I saw a NaruHina portrait (The Last) and it has splits like the Previous SasuSaku portrait. I have a feeling the NaruHina family portrait will also be involved in the pattern.

Sakura, Sasuke and Sarada family portrait in splits.

A united NaruHina Portrait is yet to be seen.

If Gaiden was concerned with Sarada, I think the movie should focus on Boruto with the Portraits in focus.

Thanks for reading. :)

Wait a minute. When did the take that photo? >.>
It can't be a Team Taka photo cause they would not have gotten the time to take a photo cause of their continuous battle streak. So, the photo was a Team Hebi photo when it first came together and formed. The photo perhaps was taken by the Cat Grandma in the Uchiha Hideout where Sasuke went for supplies.

That's actually a pretty damn good observation you had there!
Thanks. :Sparks:

This is a great observation! I didn't notice that it happened so many times till you brought it up. I wonder if it will continue into the Burrito movie and beyond (if there is more.) :)

Well, Kishi could use it in the movie with the NaruHina family, with Bolt and Naruto's differences or Team Boruto (I think a fallout between Mitsuki and Boruto can happen), but it really depends on Kishi if he wants to continue the theme.

Well, I think Oro will have a hand in that. :snick:

Not too often you get real literary analysis here. Well done.

*_* I can't wait to be able to see the movie! And when I do watch it I'll be looking for portrait symbolism now haha. It's good to have little easter eggs like that to look forward to when watching a movie I think

Bumping this thread to post some information. It seems Kishi made a special Parody chapter on the Boruto Movie :

You can see the new Team 7, Team Konohamaru Photograph/Portrait on the first page itself.

You must be registered for see images

The confirmed spoilers from the Boruto movie : talks about these photos like such :-

Naruto has a Team 7 photograph on the desk in his Hokage office.
(Dawww~)
Kurama + Susano'o combination
Sasuke and Sakura overlooking the Boruto team scene.
Pictures of the families
Orochimaru and Mitsuki comic relief at the end...lol~
These parts would be worth paying attention to in the movie.

Will a divide in the New Team 7 occur ? I would say it's possible considering that Mitsuki is Orochimaru's son. Orochimaru after all had an interest in dividing the Old Team 7 and also succeeded in the end - Sasuke leaving Konoha.

The funny scene about Orochimaru again:
Sarada asks Mitsuki whether Orochimaru is his father or his mother.
Mitsuki responds with something like 'Meh, it's inconsequential right?' -->the impression that he doesn't care which (lol~~)
Orochimaru could literally have the whole new Team 7 in the palms of his hand. Oro Foreshadowing Style :-

You see Orochimaru walking away after that.
