The Hyuuga Clan symbol is one of the most ancient known to man. The Yin/Yang. It represents the duality of all things, such as: Light and dark, male and female, good and evil, etc. They are the oldest and most prestigious clan in Konohagakure.

This is the symbol seen on the back of Rikudo Sennin in the manga. It too is an ancient symbol, representing cosmic order and the ripples in time.
(Though it is seen on the Rikudo Sennin's cloak, I do not believe it is a clan symbol but a symbol of his Sage status, the way Minato wore a cloak with Fourth Hokage written on the back. But since it is associated with him I have placed it within the thread).

The Uzumaki's clan symbol is also an ancient symbol and is interestingly similar to that of the Rikudo Sennins symbol. It represents the divine spiral in many Native American cultures and is seen in African, Central and South American, Aboriginal, Hindi, and Arawak cultures, many of which that date back to nearly ten thousand years. It's elemental representation is both wind and water, mainly taking the form of a typhoon or whirlpool.
Their clan was wiped out by the neighboring clans because their strong bodies, long life spans, and exceptional sealing techniques were greatly feared. Though the land of Eddies is in ruin a few Uzumaki survivors have been shown in the manga, such as: Naruto, Kushina, Juugo, Karin, Nagato, and Mito. It can thus be deduced that the clan is simply scattered and there may be at least a great number of them that are exiled across the ninja world.

In Japanese Shinto mythology the Fan is used to bring forth the Kamekaze (divine wind) and is usually associated with a war god. It is also associated with dragons and that may be why the Uchihas main element is fire.
Fire is also symbolic of passion, rage, hatred, power, the spirit, lust, and is usually a masculine element.
It is interesting to note that the fan is usually used by kami, and tengu and is used in mythology to also repel objects. This is what Madara seems to have in his possession. This too is an ancient symbol but only dating back a few thousand years.
I'm not trying to make a point with this thread, just found this info intriguing.
