Basic Information

Name: Gabriel Gray
Nickname: Sylar, Boogeyman, Brain Man, The Black Widow
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Clan: Katsuryoku

Appearance

Sylar is known to wear his trademark black clothing which appears similar to those of the Konoha Torture and Interrogation Force: Black pants, short shirt, long trench coat, and lightweight ninja boots. He also wears his village headband as a belt on his waist.

Personality

Sylar was raised as the son of a watchmaker, but was indoctrinated by his mothers' repeated assertions to believe that he was special and deserved more in life. This and the "evolutionary imperative" to acquire new abilities are what drive him to kill his victims with his powers. Taking the name "Sylar" from a watch brand, he has shed all connections to his former life as Gabriel Gray to the point where he angrily lashes out at anyone who calls him Gabriel. In addition to the above, Sylar shows a marked lack of empathy.

Although he at times tries to impersonate other people in order to obtain a longer-term goal, Sylar is also unable to completely control his "hunger," or obsessive tendencies, to the extent that he still intimidates people when he is trying to gain their trust or co-operation. Sylar's dominant trait was his innate desire to be recognized as special and admired. This was fueled by his mother's vocal disappointment in him for perceived failure and his own feelings that he did not get a chance to choose his destiny, being forced into the role of a watchmaker. He spent his life hoping to learn something extraordinary about himself.

Sylar is repeatedly shown as desperately looking for a family and parental figures due to his own unhappy home life, desperately wanting to be loved. The flip side of this is that he can react with extreme violence when his emotional needs are exploited by others. Sylar is also known for his voracious appetite and he can constantly be seen snacking or looking for food. He has even taken time during his murders to eat, such as when he reacted with joy at a birthday cake of the woman he just killed.

Quinto has said of his character,

"The sad part is, he's initially well-intentioned. He wants to improve his life. He wants to make a difference. He wants to matter. Through the process of realizing how to do that, he gets blinded and loses himself in the pursuit of it and goes a little crazy—'a little' being an understatement."

Quinto also observed,

"He's definitely somebody that has been overcome by a hunger and overcome by a pursuit for power and for importance that did start a little more innocuously than it evolved into."

When asked if he thought Sylar was irredeemable or not, Quinto responded,

"I think there's a certain point at which you cross a line and it's sort of irrevocable.... I don't know what the writers have in mind, but it would probably be kind of a challenge at this point, you know?"

Quinto has also responded to the question of whether Sylar could ever be good, commenting that,

"I don't really look at him as, you know, absolutely good or bad. I think that he is constantly walking a line of ambiguity within himself and uncertainty within himself that defines the way he acts."

Background Information

History: Gabriel's story isn't one you find in fairy tales full of love and innocence. His father killed his mother then disappeared leaving him an orphan at the age of 5. He wandered for months upon months seeking shelter and food. It was around this time Gabriel developed a lone wolf persona, having never really developed much social skills. Luckily in time he was adopted by a humble family in Konoha after wandering through the area. Not really knowing his name, the family named him "Gabriel Grey". The Grey's weren't anything special aside from their expertise in repairing watches and other trinkets. Growing up with them Gabriel learned a lot about their profession, possessing an unusual ability to quickly learn. At around age 6, he was enrolled into the Ninja Academy at the behest of his parents. He didn't really socialize with anyone other than the instructor and only if it was about a technique he was learning. It was around the age of 7 that his instructor noted that Gabriel could deduce a technique's inner workings by observing it firsthand and then replicating the same result but to a much more proficient level. At age 8 he graduated the academy, way earlier than his peers at the time who barely graduated at age 13. However, shortly after graduating, Gabriel's father died from a stroke due to his heavy drinking habits. Though never mentioning it to anyone, his adoptive father was an alcoholic, constantly abusing both his mother and him. Although he felt sad, he didn't show much emotion around his mother. Gabriel asked for some time off training and missions to mourn the loss of his father but in fact he used this as a ploy to focus on himself and take over the shop.

During his time off, his mother became mentally ill though not to an extent where it imposed a danger or concern. She began to suddenly encourage Gabriel that he was special and he deserved the best. This pressure led him to question himself and what he was doing had any significance. After many years of living with his mother, whose health started deteriorating, Gabriel snapped and killed his mother when she mentioned that she should have left him in the forests to die. To cover up her death, he made an elaborate plot that he had to send her to another town where they could help her with her condition. No one really questioned him so the truth was never known however this greatly scarred Gabriel. It was then he decided to leave Konohagakure and travel to Kirigakure as he felt they would understand his life better. Before heading off, Gabriel buried his mother in a quiet place in the Nara Forest. The epithet read, "Though blood we are not, love and spirit you will always remain." On the way bottom, in small letters, read, "Here lies Gabriel Grey - May you find your path in the next life." He then walked away, leaving his former life behind.

"I understood it before the killing, I had a reason - to take what others didn't deserve. It was natural selection."

Descent into Madness

Upon arriving at the Land of Water, Gabriel decided that he needed a new name, a new identity. He looked at his watch to see what time with it and noted the name engraved on it - Sylar. He grinned slightly and looked a his map which lead to a tavern outside Kirigakure. He sat down at the bar near the counter. He asked for a tall glass of coffee and a shot of goat piss. While he waited, he couldn't help but overhear the drunkards talk about Kiri. They seemed knowledgeable and decided to sit behind them and listen in as he got his order. He took out a small flask of alcohol out of his trenchcoat and poured it into the coffee. He took the shot, took a sip of the coffee, and relished in the warm taste in his mouth. One of them mentioned how his watch no longer worked and he felt quite sad since it was his granfather's watch. It was then Sylar got up and walked to their table. They looked at him cautiously as he stood there not making a sound. Sylar then reached over the table and grabbed the watch. This prompted the rest of the men from the table to get up and take out their knives, preparing themselves to attack him. However, Sylar appeared unfazed by their actions and proceeded to take out his tools to fix the watch. They watched in amazement at his quick work. Sylar then handed the fixed watch to the man and then walked out, all without saying a word. The men all looked at each other and said, "[censored by NB standards]".

Looking at his map, Sylar then pinpointed where Kirigakure might be and walked in that direction. He deduced that they wouldn't let him just waltz in so on his way he contemplated several strategies in his mind. As he came near the gates, Sylar noticed the men approaching as well. By looking at their clothes and how they carried themselves, Sylar deduced they were either soldiers or mercenaries. He approached the man whom he had fixed a watch for. The man looked at him happily and shook his hand in gratitude for his help earlier. Using his kills of persuasion, he asked the man that if he can help him get in Kiri as he had came to the Land of Water to set up a fix-it shop. The man gladly helped him pass the guards and even helped give him directions to an abandoned shop. Sylar thanked him though it had all been part of his plan as he had deduced back at the bar the man was clearly from Kirigakure. As he entered the shop alone, he spoke to himself, "And here I thought I could evade being a watchmaker...well at the very least I didn't have to go through the trouble of going to the Inn." Sylar goes up the steps of the shop and finds a quaint little apartment. "Well, well...Didn't expect this bonus. Time to fix it up a bit.

Over the next several weeks, Sylar fixed up the shop and opened it for business. For a while Sylar fixed watches and methodically killed people to satisfy his hunger for knowledge. Not a word was said except rumors in the tavern. Sylar rather enjoyed pretending to be quiet and harmless while continuing his experiments. Over time he practiced the methods he had learned from the Konoha Interrogation Unit. One could say he went mad yet still he kept a sort of humanity by making a private room hidden under the store where he painted several redeeming messages like, "I have sinned!" and "Forgive me". You see, Sylar had been traumatized by his mother's murder and the lines became blurred. He tried hard to find himself beneath the crimes he was committing. Eventually though his once warm personality had turned into sarcastic and callous. Even when he tried being nice it usually ended up being intimidating. Sylar accepted it and took pride in his abilities and capabilities but eventually his crimes drew the attention of the authorities and one man - Shunsui.

Tale of Two Paths

It happened for several weeks that the authorities would come and question Sylar about mysterious disappearances happening in Kirigakure. Every time he was questioned, Sylar used his charm and deny any knowledge leading the men to leave him alone but pass darting glances to each other. But he wasn't safe for long as later that day, a mysterious man came to the shop. Sylar welcomed him to which he replied, "Hello Gabriel". His eyes widening, Sylar remained almost unfazed by the reply but remained cautious.

"Gabriel is dead and buried. My name is...", said Sylar before being interrupted. "Sylar...right, right. Anyways, I think we need to have a talk. This isn't a suggestion. This is a command." Although the man appeared quite easygoing, he spoke with an authority which only came from people who have fought many battles and led many men to their deaths. Sylar walked around the counter and turned the sign to read, "Closed". He motioned the man to follow him to another room. Being one of his best rooms, the place was rather small and quaint, laid with many pillows and drapes. In the middle was a table filled with many herbs for smoking and on a small shelf on the side, there were many small bottles of alcohol. The two men sat down, smoked, and began a lengthy conversation about Sylar. Though not surprised, Sylar still gave an impression that he was surprised by the information he had gathered. "So...how do you know so much about me. Even I don't know that much about myself. How can anyone really know what they are capable of?"

Though Shady seemed rather lazy, when he spoke, he sounded wiser than any old man he had encountered. This made a rather big impression on Sylar that he grew to respect him despite barely knowing him. After their conversation, Shady then replied, "If you want to learn more about yourself I think you need to start looking where your past begins." Sylar slyly replied, "Oh really and where is that?" Shady then replied as he closed his eyes and released smoke from his mouth. "The gathering place of the Katsuryoku Clan. I think you will learn a lot there. However you need to keep this between us. They won't be happy if you decide to loosen those lips of yours." The two then laughed and then proceeded to plan to leave Kirgakure. After getting his affairs in order, Shady told Sylar that he would go ahead of him and prepare his arrival. He gave Sylar instructions on the location and the two departed ways.

The Straying Leaf

It wasn't long after Sylar arrived at Konohagakure that he remembered what he had done. He stood at the gates and stared blankly onward. There was a struggle within himself which he had not felt in a long time. Killing his mother had unleashed a hunger, a desire to want to know more. Most of the time he could control it but sometimes, he felt so hopeless and gave into it. Ever since then, it controlled him...like if he was two people, he felt a constant battle with himself. As he thought about it, Sylar felt it hard to breathe. Then he felt a headache as he soon knew what would happen.

"No, no, no, no!! Not here!! Aghhhhhh!!"

Then without notice, someone hit him behind the head causing Sylar to black out. When he came to, he was in different clothes like that worn in a prison. He was in a tiny, grey room with a thick glass in front of him. It appeared to be a holding cell considering his bed looked more like a surgery table than an actual bed for comfort. Sylar banged against the glass window and yelled out, "I need to get out! I don't belong he-"

"You aren't going anywhere, Mr. Grey." As the man approached from the shadows of the other side of the window, Sylar had a terrified look on his face. Usually Sylar wasn't intimidated but as he looked upon the man with the horn-rimmed glasses...his heart stopped. "You...you put me here!! Why?!!" Sylar quickly knew he wouldn't get any answers getting angry so he calmed himself down and spoke in a more softer tone. When paired with his creepy stare and intimidating aura, this gave people the impression he was being insincere. Sylar looked up at the man and spoke, "So how did you find me?" The man with the horn-rimmed glasses, though appearing quite warm and kind, looked quite unfazed by Sylar and his intimidation. In fact he looked more confident especially whenever he spoke. It was condescending. "I admit you were hard to find but we all make mistakes sometime. I knew you would eventually slip. It's human nature." Sylar started becoming more angry but kept himself composed. "Human nature..." Sylar began running his finger across the glass as he spoke. He felt in the mood to be playful and it seemed the man would indulge him on his curiosity. "You see human nature is a wonderful thing. It eventually forces itself to evolve. To become better. "Special"..." The man interrupted him again, "And what? You think you are that special?" This seemed to have aggravated Sylar even more as he slammed his palms on the glass and yelled, "I AM SPECIAL!! (Ahem) I am special and it's only a matter of time till the world sees that." The man gave a grin suggesting he was mocking Sylar. "Not if I have something to say about it. I have a feeling you will adjust to your new home quickly otherwise I'll have to take measures to make it so." With that the man turned away and started walking off. Sylar yelled out, "Don't walk away from me Noah! You get me out of here or I swear I'll-" Interrupting him for the last time he replies, "Or what?" Sylar gave a evil grin and replied then, "Claire..." This seemed to have really hit a nerve because his next reply came out from a fatherly concern rather than a cold and distant man he had been portraying, "You stay away from her or I'll bury you myself if I have to". As he walked away and out, Sylar yelled out "Noah! Noah!"

Sylar had gotten himself into a real mess. He sat on the makeshift bed and grabbed his knees. He felt quite angry though not at the man but at himself. Ever since he could remember he had had a hunger, something he couldn't satisfy. Killing people seemed almost inevitable and although it temporarily satisfied it, it never really made it go away. He had no one to turn to so it was just a matter of time for Sylar to enter a depression. But all was not lost as he soon realized. Without any people, Sylar found it easy to meditate and focus on himself. With time, they lent him books and thus increased in knowledge. With all the extra time he had on his hands he came to understand his hunger and how to control it, or at least in theory. It's not like Sylar had given up or that he didn't think about escaping. After all, he had plenty to do but considering his situation, he had no choice but stay put. As he laid himself to sleep one day he tried to remember about the man with the horn-rimmed glasses.
Four Months Ago

It had been a hot day and Sylar had been out doing someone's lawn though under the guise of Gabe. Though the man he had been working for didn't know him at first, the man knew one thing - this man could not be trusted. The man Sylar had been working for went by the name of Noah Bennett. The two almost danced dangerously in conversation whenever they would talk to each other. Both men were intimidating and that caught the attention of Claire, Noah's daughter. She was a pretty blonde, short girl who seemed to be emit a deep sadness veiled by her beautiful smile that almost seemed genuine. She softly motioned to her dad to ease up as the two had been on the run for a while. Trust was something they didn't easily give and "Gabe" was no exception. Using his charm however won Claire over though in hindsight, it was only to be more hospitable and less conspicuous. But something happened that changed the fate of the two and the world.

While the two were alone in the house, Claire decided to cook something special for dinner. She got the ingredients she needed and as she waited for the water to boil, she went up to her room of their two story house. She went inside and she picked up a photo, staring outside lost in thought. She was so preoccupied that she didn't notice Sylar enter the room and stare at her. He creepily spoke to her, "What are you thinking about, Claire?" She gasped as she turned around, startled at his intrusion. "What are you doing up here?" Sylar approached slowly still gazing at her like a lion gazes upon a gazelle he is about to eat. "You have something I want Claire." Frightened, Claire throws her lamp at him, hitting him in the face. She ran past him towards the kitchen but as she reaches the kitchen something seemed off to her. She couldn't move. Sylar had put her into a genjutsu and made it seem like he was telekinetically controlling her. He then proceeded to place her on a table and began to give her the illusion he was cutting her head open. The whole illusion caused her to pass out given the strength of it. Horrified at what he had done, Sylar ran hoping to escape the damage he had done. He ran as far as he could until he felt he could run no more. Time passed as says turned into four months. It was then he came upon Konohagakure. He wasn't sure how he came here but he hoped this place would help him. Though he was determined to go to the Hall Shady had mentioned, he needed help. This wasn't an easy thing to admit as he had been on his own for a while. He hoped he didn't have to run anymore.

Saving Grace

Spending time in the holding cell really changed Sylar, for the good. With time he was allowed to go to the surface (considering the holding cell was beneath Konoha). It was then he wanted to learn more about himself and become a better person. He was tired of killing and much less being used to kill others. Not paying attention as he walked the streets, Sylar bumped into a man who seemed rather young. Sylar looked at him and replied meekly, "My apologies. I wasn't paying attention." The kid looked at Sylar and grinned. "Is something the matter?" The kid replied confidently, "Nope but I think today is your lucky day." Sylar asked inquisitively, "Oh is that so? How do you figure?" The kid looked down and replied quite sadly, "You have the same look I had when I was lost and looking for purpose. I think you should meet my sensei, Korra-chan. She knows a lot of stuff. She might be able to help you." Sylar smiled and followed after the young man towards a temple with a symbol of a spider. After a lengthy conversation between the three of them, Sylar accepted to be trained in summoning spiders and use their powers in combat. Sylar asked the kid his name as he was leaving on his last day of training. "Miles...Miles Morales. But since we know each other, you can call me Spider Man." Sylar laughed and agreed to call him that but he preferred Miles better. Sylar thanked him greatly and promised the two that they would keep close contact which was something new to him. It wasn't everyday that you meet someone to trust and confide in. Sylar walked away into the sunset and headed for his destination to learn about his destiny and hopefully find answers.

Other Information

Ever since he could remember, Sylar has had a hunger which he couldn't explain. He figured this feeling came from his love of food but after killing his mother it became quite clear to him it was something more. Having a logical thought process, Sylar always looked at things in his life with a sort of detachment, questioning the "how" and "why". He always wanted to know more later becoming an obsession especially with details. This transcended into his skills as a shinobi, being able to understand people's behavior and to a certain extent, thought process. Despite any pressure that could be placed on him, he always seemed intrigued especially when it came to pain. Perhaps he was a closet sadist or perhaps it was to understand how it felt so that he could later use the same concept on his enemies. However despite his skill in torture, Sylar still appreciated life and would become angry if his target died or decided to end his own life. During his time as a prisoner in Konoha, he was used as an interrogator in the Konohagakure Intelligence and Interrogation Unit. Despite him being a criminal, it was undeniable that his tactics and approach were effective. However as time passed serving under them, Sylar developed a sadistic nature which then prompted them to discontinue his involvement though Sylar still retained what he had learned from them.

Specialties

Genjutsu (One Handseal)

As a former member of the Interrogation Unit, Sylar was not a stranger to illusionary tactics. His high intelligence and intuitiveness allowed him to far surpass those who did not specialize in the subject, being able to use one handseal to perform techniques. This advantage allowed him to be well prepared and aware of his surroundings especially if they were to be used against him. Coupled with his sadistic nature, Sylar can be quite intimidating opponent. Sylar attributes this to his expert training by the legendary Lancer (Noni).

Ninjutsu (Faster Handseals)

Alongside being taught about genjutsu, Sylar also learned the art of Ninjutsu including its various applications using weapons. When coupled with his high intelligence, Sylar can turn even a shoe into a makeshift weapon. Lancer taught him a great deal of strategies using ninjutsu some of which transcended into their genjutsu sessions. Sylar is able to use ninjutsu techniques requiring handseals faster than a non-specialist.

Spiderman's Protégé

As bestowed upon him by the special spider named Ākādo. Where his iconic move (Burū jorogumo) - Blue Joro Spider can be used in the blink of an eye, usually coming from his hands rather than his mouth, which at times is covered by a mask.

After signing the Spider Contract and mastering Spider Ninjutsu, Sylar was taught one of the ultimate techniques, the ability to produce webs all over your body to create a tightly knit suit of chakra-enhanced webbing. Needless to say this is what can be seen on Sylar anytime he's on the scene under the moniker of The Black Widow. While also undergoing training, Sylar was one of the lucky one's to be able to be offered to learn the Flow of The White Spider CFS.

The Leaf's Heritage: The Will of Fire

Sylar also holds close to him the Will of Fire. Which is a belief that shows love and when things turn grim, a Konoha ninja can overcome it. This is what the The Will of Fire is, and what it means to Sylar as well.

1. What? I don't know what you said? ;^;
2. Actually this was to be my Katsu bio for good. I also went back to Kakashi considering I feel more at home with him. You are a witness to that. I really wish our fight would have been longer though. Would have been fun to have more dialogue between Sasuke and Kakashi. Or do you think I overdid it in my rp?
