Then he summons Itachi to thank him for sparing his life and/or tells him that they failed to stop the edo tensei and that he can sense that Madara is still out there. He lets Itachi keep his personality and they both head to the battlefield. Kabuto becoming a hero makes sense if Kishi plans to have him go back to the village he lived in as a child.
