No ems... Ems madara is one par so he went from the strongest to madara being his equal back then they fought many times no one actually winning until VOTE

Rinnegan came after so he didn't face hashirama who dead after VOTE most likely he was still suffering from vote and some powerful ninja took advantage

Hashirama was fighting to kill Madara was fighting to take his DNA, it's like Pain vs Naruto, If pain wanted to kill Naruto he would have easily done it but he was trying to capture him and the fight was Hashirama and Mito vs Madara and the deamon fox, when Hashirama took control of the fox, Mito sealed the fox in her during the fight to help hashirama. So it was Hashirama + Kyuubi +Mito vs Madara(who wasnt trying to kill).

bad theory why would Madara need Hashirama alive, he could have killed and take his DNA after, he hated Hashirama, beating him would have made him the strongest alive, he took the DAN as a consolation thing, after seeing that he can't defeat Hashirama.
