For a long time it was said that Warner Bros. and DC Comics were prepping a Justice League movie for release in 2015. Seemingly a reaction to the incredible success of Marvel’s The Avengers, it looked like we were finally going to see heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and The Flash unite on the big screen in live-action for the first time ever.
That’s no longer the case. After months of reports, rumors and speculation, the dream of a 2015 Justice League movie fell apart. But in its place, rising from the ashes like a phoenix, is an entirely different project for comic book fans to be excited for: a Superman/Batman movie.
Collecting all of the news that has come out since the new movie – and sequel to Man of Steel - was announced, we have we have broken down absolutely everything that we know about the Superman/Batman movie thus far. Given that Man of Steel has already made $630 million worldwide, there was very little chance that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David Goyer wouldn’t be returning for the sequel, and that assumption was proven true when the Superman/Batman movie was announced at Comic-Con with Snyder directing and Goyer writing the script. The film doesn’t have an official start date yet, but Warner Bros. has confirmed that cameras will begin rolling in the first half of next year and that the finished product will be hitting theaters on July 17, 2015.

When Warner Bros. announced at Comic-Con that they would be moving forward with a Superman/Batman movie, they didn’t include a plot synopsis telling us what the movie is about – but titles for the film mentioned by Goyer suggest that the film will have the two heroes at each other’s throats. During the panel celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Superman, the screenwriter told the audience, "We’re actually not sure whether the title is Superman vs. Batman or Batman vs. Superman but yes, it’s–that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that’s happening." Combined with Harry Lennix’s aggressive "Dark Knight Returns" quote at Comic-Con and the fact that Warner Bros. has registered both BatmanvsSupermanMovie.com and Batmanvs.Superman.com and there appears to be a good amount of evidence suggesting that Superman and Batman will be enemies before they become friends.
We've also heard that director Zack Snyder is meeting with Frank Miller to discuss the project. Specifically they're meeting to "go over the plans for the Superman film." Miller, for his part, had no idea a Batman vs. Superman movie was happening even though it was announced at Comic Con using a quote from "The Dark Knight Returns", a comic he wrote. We don't know what level of involvement Miller will really have yet, whether he's collaborating on the script or just going over a few ideas. (Image via DeviantArt)

Following in the footsteps of Marvel Studios and starting to build a larger cinematic universe, Warner Bros. is making the Superman/Batman movie both to introduce a new take on the Dark Knight and to build on what has already been established with the Man of Tomorrow. As was expected, Henry Cavill will be returning to play Clark Kent/Superman and will continue to learn how to live up to his destiny while also trying to find his place in humanity. And something tells us that he will probably have to deal with the fact that Man of Steel not only had the hero killing his enemy, but also leveling half of Metropolis in the battle beforehand.

You didn’t really think that the sequel to Man of Steel would only be bringing back Superman, did you? In the studio press release that was sent around announcing the Superman/Batman movie it was confirmed that the 2015 title will also feature the return of Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Without a plot synopsis it’s impossible to tell how these actors/characters will fit into the story, but a baseline guess would be that the film further explores the relationship between Clark and Lois, sees more of the hero at work at the newspaper, and has Supes returning back to Smallville at some point to visit his mother.

It only took about a month after the Batman vs. Superman movie was announced for Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. to find the actor they wanted to play the Dark Knight, and the name they officially landed on is Ben Affleck. As had been assumed beforehand, the casting confirmed that the new version of the Caped Crusader would be a veteran hero, and the version of the character has since been described as "tired and weary and seasoned." We still don’t know much about the look we can expect, but if Kevin Smith is to be trusted then apparently the design is "mindbending."

Thanks to the official announcement that the production will be filming in Detroit for scenes set in Gotham City, we know that the new film will be giving us a new look at The Dark Knight’s hometown. The question that remains, however, is who among its more notable inhabitants we will get to see. Will they need to find a new actor to play Alfred? What about Commissioner Gordon? At this point the only Batman-related supporting character who we’ve heard anything about is Nightwing, a.k.a. the former Robin **** Grayson. While nothing is official, there have been reports that Girls star Adam Driver is being looked at for the part, but at this point nothing has been confirmed either way.

It turns out that Batman and Superman may not be the only legendary DC Comics superheroes that wind up being in the Man of Steel sequel. Buzz about Wonder Woman’s potential involvement in the 2015 blockbuster began when Thor: The Dark World star Jaimie Alexander revealed that she has had a meeting with DC Comics about possible projects, but talk has only increased since. Reports since have named actresses like Olga Kurylenko, Elodie Yung and Gal Gadot as being possible candidates for the female lead in Batman vs. Superman, and fans have taken those reports to speculation-ville and wondered aloud if the three "tall, brunette, athletic and exotic" actresses may be up to play Diana Prince.
