Alright, I finally finished another chapter. For those who read these, whom I'm grateful for, this story hasn't really been giving me the right motivation to do it lately, so these chapters are coming out rather slow. ...Thankfully, though, now that it's getting near the end, I'm starting to get that feel, so hopefully, I can get the last five chapters out quickly
Enjoy
With only four matches held throughout the entire day, it wasn't surprising to anybody that the intermissions between each one were much longer than those from the previous days of the Super Smash tournament, though that didn't make it any less tedious for the anxious crowd. They couldn't be blamed, though. At this point, the remaining brawlers consisted only of the strongest and most skilled fighters, most of whom came from legend, not only in their universe, but in numerous others, as well. The Mushroom Kingdom's greatest hero and its greatest villain, Kongo Jungle's number-one sidekick, Hyrule Kingdom's greatest defender, and Altea's most powerful swordsman were all that remained, though by nightfall, one of the latter two would be removed from the competition. The victor was anybody's guess, but it would undoubtedly be a spectacle surpassed by only a select few in the tournament's history.
Despite having just returned from a surprising match outcome, both Donkey Kong and Diddy appeared as if they had forgotten it ever happened, having returned to the same activities they were enjoying before their match began. The other remaining brawlers, with the exception of Bowser, were sat on the opposite side of the mess hall, enjoying a small meal of their own, as they watched the two gorge themselves on another large pile of bananas. Each of them was wondering the exact same thing, Ike being the first to share these thoughts.
"It's difficult to believe that Donkey Kong can appear so vague to the fact that he was just defeated by his greatest admirer no more than an hour ago."
Not being avid speakers themselves, Mario and Link simply nodded in agreement before returning to their meals, which prompted Ike to do the same. The latter two wouldn't be staying for long, though, as Zelda's voice echoed through the mess hall.
"This day has been one of both triumph and defeat. But, the day doesn't end until there are only four brawlers left in the tournament. Two swordsmen of legend still await battle upon this arena. But, are you as ready for the match to begin as they are!?"
The crowd's answer was much more enthusiastic than it had been before. …It seemed that they've been eagerly awaiting this match-up for some time. Ike and Link hurriedly left the mess hall after disposing of their remaining food, the latter waving to Mario as he walked out into the hall.
"I must admit, my friend, this is a match I've waited readily for."
Before continuing, he reached for his sheath and pulled out his sword for Link to see.
"This is Ragnell, a sword on which numerous legends are based, …much like your Master Sword. Both are well-known for their mysterious abilities…and today, we find out which blade is the most powerful of all. …I hope you're ready for this match, Link. You won't find me to be nearly as easy a challenge for you as Fox."
Link merely nodded in response to Ike's decree. …He was now rather eager to see if Ike would live up to his word.
Stepping out into the center of the colliseum, which was now lit up by numerous spotlights as the Smash realm's sun began to set, the two swordsmen were instantly greeted by an enormous display of love and admiration from their audience, …for which they were very grateful. They wasted no time in returning the favor, assuming their positions as the referee came forward to begin their match. Silence befell the colliseum, as it had before, …everyone present raring to find out which of them would make the first move.
"3, 2, 1, GO!"
Ike drew his blade as the crowd burst to life once again, while Link refused to do so just yet. Not sure of his intentions, Ike took a few steps forward, hoping to provoke him. …He wasn't about to charge into a trap as soon as this match began.
"Link, …just what are you playing at?"
They kept this distance for at least ten minutes until Link finally began looking around the stadium.
"What in the world is he…wait…"
He was looking at the platform floating over Ike's head, …but why turn his attention there…unless he saw something that Ike didn't? Considering the odds, he eventually decided that it was unlikely to be a trap, so he leaped through the platform, …only to be caught in a large explosion.
"Whoa!"
His damage count rising to twenty-five as a result of the blast, Ike quickly retreated to the center of the arena before turning around and locking eyes with his opponent.
"A bob-omb, …it had to be. …He's quite clever. He knew that I would try to go for whatever had caught his eye and used that against me."
"Rather smart move on your part, Link! But, don't think you have the upper hand here in any way!"
Link only smirked in response before finally drawing his sword, prompting Ike to strengthen the grip on his own.
"No matter how powerful the Master Sword may be, Link, do keep in mind that it's made of metal like any other blade. Ragnell, on the other hand, is a two-handed sword, which makes its strength and durability far superior to that of your own. …So, don't be too rash…or you might just lose your greatest weapon."
Stepping forward and hoisting the giant blade over his head, Ike broke into a short-lived dash before leaping into the air and sending the blade crashing down on Link's position, though his opponent was able to quickly roll out of his line of attack. Taking advantage of the weight of Ike's blade, Link moved in to strike, …only to be stopped in his tracks as the Master Sword collided with its Altean counterpart. Having ceased all movement in the heat of the moment, the young hero appeared visibly stunned by this unlikely turn of events.
"You look rather surprised, Link. …I don't carry a sword of this size and this power without knowing the disadvantages that come with it…and it's only because I can match its strength that I wield it at all. …The weight of this blade holds no effect on my prowess in battle."
Had he been one for words, Link couldn't have possibly argued against this, …not with such evidence resting before his eyes. Realizing the advantage that Ike now had in power, he quickly retreated back and lifted his shield. …As the odds suggested, he would need its protection soon enough.
Prepared to launch his next attack, Ike lifted his sword and began building energy within his body. Recognizing this stance, Link quickly prepared himself to leap over his attacking opponent. …Unfortunately for the hero of Hyrule, the leader of the Greil Mercenaries had more than enough combat experience to take heed of his intentions. Releasing his fully charged Quick Draw ability, the force of the attack sent him soaring across the stadium, stopping only inches in front of Link, who jumped into the air as they both had planned. …Virtually helpless in mid-air, he could only brace himself as Ike unleashed another attack, initiated by throwing his enormous sword into the air. Unable to defend himself, Link took the full blunt of the blade, proceeding ever higher into the air as he became trapped in Ragnell's pull. …Only seconds later, Ike joined him fifty feet above the stage, grabbing ahold of his sword once again and sending it crashing down on the stadium, pulling Link along with it.
"Aether!"
Unwilling to give his opponent a chance to recover, Ike quickly raised his sword over his head the moment he found himself able to do so, hurling the giant blade upon Link before he could respond. His damage count soaring past fifty, their close proximity to the arena's edge caused the young swordsman to fall over the side, saving himself by grabbing onto the ledge. Having dropped his shield in the midst of Ike's earlier attack, Link was left with nothing to defend himself after pulling his body back onto the stage, his opponent already closing in to strike once more. …The Triforce of Courage shining brightly on his left hand, Link acknowledged his lack of other options and did the only thing he could now do to defend himself, …hoisting the Master Sword over his head to meet Ragnell's incoming assault. Holding nothing back, Ike tossed his sword up once again and leaped into the air to retrieve it before crashing down on Link's position.
"AETHER!!"
The intensity of the collision between the two blades left half of the arena lost beneath a cloud of dust, but when it finally cleared, …the entire audience, as well as Ike, were shocked to find Link still on one knee, …the Master Sword having barely budged in the face of the powerful attack.
"What!? …But how?"
In the balcony overseeing the arena, Marth and Peach share similar reactions, the former placing his into words.
"That’s impossible. Ragnell's strength holds no equal, even in the presence of the Master Sword. …Link's blade should have been shattered into pieces."
Overhearing this, Zelda could not help but smile at Marth's ignorance of the Master Sword's true power.
"Don't be so sure of your words, Marth."
"Hm?"
"…That sword was forged by the three goddesses that watch over Hyrule, sent from the heavens for the sole purpose of vanquishing all evil that crosses paths with he who wields it. …Its blade shall not be so easily broken."
Hearing her words, Marth returned his gaze to the two brawlers. While previously aware of the Master Sword's origins, …until this point, he had never truly considered its power to be divine.
"…But even then, what chance does he have against Ike?"
Putting all his strength into his next move, Link slowly got to his feet before forcing his opponent off of him and performing his signature technique: …the Spin Attack. Knocked to the ground by the force of the assault, Ike quickly stood up with another sixteen points added to his damage counter.
"Rrrgh, …not good. I shouldn't have underestimated the power of that sword. …Now, my sole advantage in this match is completely obsolete."
Picking up his shield again, Link paused a moment to regain some of his strength before breaking into a dash in Ike's direction. Hoping to keep as much distance now as possible, his opponent quickly retreated to the other side of the stadium, all the while looking for an item that might shift this match in his favor. …He found one.
"…An assist trophy! Perfect!"
Grabbing it with his free hand as he ran past it, he spun around to face Link before hoisting it into the air.
"Take this!"
A dim light began emitting from within the glass casing, which shattered shortly afterwards, leaving in its place a young woman with long, green hair and a blue dress, …someone that Marth, Roy, and Ike easily recognized, shouting her name simultaneously from their respective positions across the colliseum.
"Lyn!"
Unsheathing her katana and hoisting it up to collect power, she looked down at Ike with a smile on her face.
"I'll handle this!"
Seeing the imminent danger in her attack, Link quickly fell back and lifted his shield, in hopes that it might absorb the majority of the damage. To his surprise, however, the moment her blade appeared to have finished charging up energy, she disappeared from sight. With his damage counter well over fifty, his defeat was almost guaranteed if her attack were to hit. …But, Link had seen far too many battles to allow that. So, using his well-trained eyes and sensitive hearing, he left no side of him unchecked until, finally, …she reemerged from beneath the floor of the arena, her blade held out to strike. …Fortunately, this was one of Link's three most anticipated points of attack, allowing him to easily roll out of her path, much to both her surprise and Ike's dismay.
"What?!"
Her attack unsuccessful, Lyn's time on the stage had reached its end, causing her to vanish just as she appeared, a baffled expression still ripe on her face. In spite of this missed opportunity, however, Ike's damage count was still much lower than that of his opponent, which urged him to continue on the offensive, …something Link easily anticipated. Performing yet another fully powered Quick Draw attack, Ike soared across the stage, only to hit thin air as his opponent rolled out of harm's way. Unwilling to waste any time whatsoever, Link quickly lifted his sword overhead before sending it slashing across Ike's back, immediately following this with a second slash. Adding almost fifty points in total, Ike's damage count rocketed past his opponent's, quickly placing the match back in Link's favor.
"Rrrrgh, that smarts. …This isn't good. I have to retreat now or it's over."
Utilizing the fastest technique at his disposal, Ike used his Aether ability once again, only this time, as a means to escape to the platform hovering overhead. …Upon touching down on it, he found that a rather useful item had been laying dormant over their heads for some time.
"A home-run bat…hmhm, this match is as good as over."
Quickly picking it up and holding it at the ready, he began waiting patiently for Link to follow him up. …To his utter shock, however, within six seconds after grabbing the bat, he found himself buried halfway beneath the ground, causing him to drop his item back on the platform.
"No, …how? This isn't…this isn't possible."
Moments later, Link joined him on the platform, taking the bat into his own hand after noticing it on the ground. …Ike, however, was much too astonished to notice this, now focusing his thoughts solely on the reason for this turn of events, …turning to his opponent for confirmation after coming up with an answer.
"…A pitfall. …It appeared right after I leaped up here, didn't it?"
Link merely nodded to confirm his accuracy.
"I see. …Very well played, my friend. …Hmhmhm, don't see this as the start of a pattern, though, Link. Rest assured, the next tournament will be won by me."
Pleased to see Ike unaffected by his loss, Link smiled briefly before holding the bat away from this opponent, …then swiftly swinging it forward, its iconic sound echoing throughout the colliseum as the hit connected. …A home-run bat virtually guaranteeing victory in any match, the audience burst to life in celebration for Link's victory before Ike even passed the Blast Line.
"Game! The winner is…Link!"
Up on the balcony, the monarchs of Hyrule and Altea exchanged views on the match's outcome, while the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, being the neutral party in this group of three, merely stood by and listened.
"Hmmm, …such a shame. Had Ike stayed at ground level only a few more seconds, he might have claimed that item for his own…and these results may have been inverted."
"Perhaps, …but bear in mind, Marth, that his damage count was rapidly approaching three digits, so his chances of survival had he remained there were not exactly high."
"…I suppose not. …Link did very well, I must say."
"Hmhmhm, and so did Ike."
"…Yeah. …Hmhm, he certainly did."
Waving to the enthusiastic crowd in appreciation, Link took a bow of both gratitude and respect as his gaze passed by Hyrule's beloved princess, who nodded her head in return, a smile growing on her face. Waiting patiently for Ike to return to the stage, they shook hands in respect before retreating back inside as the day came to an end, followed shortly by the brawlers who watched the match take place. While Marth followed their examples, Zelda and Peach remained outside, …their duties as the hostesses of the tournament not yet completed.
"And so the tournament's third day reaches its end. Congratulations to Mario, …Bowser, …Diddy Kong, …and Link for making it this far!"
The crowd's cheers grew ever louder as each brawler's name left Peach's mouth. …Zelda continued for her once the majority of the screams had subsided.
"I speak for Princess Peach, myself, and all the fantastic brawlers who have taken part in the fourth Super Smash Tournament for your fellow participation in this spectacular event! …Tomorrow, the semi-finals begin, as the odds grow even higher! Who will move on to the last day of the tournament…and what new element will be added to the matches for our final four brawlers to deal with?"
"…Join us again tomorrow to find out. Good night, everyone."
Having built up more than enough excitement to keep the Smash fans awake all night in anticipation, the princesses finished their farewells with one final bow before returning inside for the night.
