Chapter 21 - Best Buds

While no one could guarantee that this coming match would signal the day's climax, its excitement and anticipation was undenouncable. Very few match-ups of similar relation have occurred at the Smash, the most memorable of which was a clash between the Mario Bros. in the second tournament. Though, while Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong weren't brothers, one could not deny that their bond rivaled that of the famous plumbers, and their battle was sure to be an interesting display of power and ability, as well as a remarkable test of their friendship. Contrary to the match between Ness and Lucas, however, both halves of this pair had strong confidence, possibly even overconfidence, in their chances of victory against one another. Whether these feelings originated from conceit or hope, though, no one could truly ascertain.

After tiring of their usual activities, which really only boiled down to eating bananas and running around the mess hall, the two apes decided to go for a walk through the corridors and waste time before their match began. In contrast to their usual behavior, they were both rather silent, while Diddy, in particular, wasn't quite as hyperactive as he tended to be. Donkey Kong noticed this after a while and questioned his young sidekick on the matter.

"Ooo oo ooh aa?" ("You okay, little buddy?")

The smaller ape looked up at his old friend with his normal cheerful expression, though it was somewhat obvious to the latter that his thoughts were completely contradicting his façade.

"Oo ah ee ee ee ee. Aa ah?" (Yeah, I'm doing great, big guy. Why do you ask?")

"...Ook ook. Oo oo ook" ("Come on, Diddy. I know you better than that.")

Diddy took a long breath before looking back up at DK.

"Oo. Oo ooo ee ah oo oo...ee ee. Aa aa oo?" ("I don't know. It's just that I've been pretty hyped all this time about getting a chance to fight you, but now that it's here,...the pressure's just starting to seep in. Do you feel that way?")

Taking in every word, Donkey Kong looked straight ahead and closed his eyes for a moment, finally opening them when he had an answer to Diddy's question. He almost half-smiled as he gave it.

"Ooo oo. Oo-o-o-o-o-ook ook ook. Ee ee ah ah oo oo. Oo ook. Oo ah oo ah." ("Not really. But you have to remember, Diddy, I'm not the one trying to prove himself here, as mean as that sounds. You're trying to surpass me, but at the same time, it should give you more motivation to win than I have. That gives you an advantage over me. It makes you more capable of winning.")

As the last grunt exited his mouth, Diddy almost immediately began jumping around in the air. It seemed that the spark of excitement was there once again.

"Oo ah! Ah ah ah! Oo oo-o-o-o ee!" ("Yeah! I can do this! Thanks, DK, but you better watch out now, cause it's on!")

The larger ape chuckled to himself as he watched this insanity occur.

"As crazy a lunatic as ever, I guess. You better give me a show, little buddy."

Their conversation was cut short as the moment of dread passed over them...and it was using Peach's voice.

"It's so hard to believe that the day is already halfway over, as is the tournament. But, these matches are in no way going to leave you disappointed. That, I can guarantee!"

The crowd cheered in response to this powerful statement, as if pleading for her to be correct.

"This could very easily be the most interesting match-up of the third round, if not the entire tournament. These two have been friends for as far back as they can remember, but now, we're going to ask them to face each other in combat. It's the king of the jungle and his trusted sidekick! Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, please make your way to the arena!"

Inside the colliseum, the two quickly did as they were asked, each of them now fully prepared for their first bout as foes rather than friends.

Upon stepping outside, the two were immediately greeted by the loud screams of the die-hard fans of the Smash, each one eagerly awaiting the start of the match. Not wasting any time before taking their positions, the referee didn't procrastinate, either. It seemed everyone wanted this fight to begin at once. They certainly got what they hoped for.

"3, 2, 1, GO!"

Diddy wasn't slow to begin his assault, pulling out his Peanut Popguns and firing them at DK as soon as the chance appeared. The damage the peanuts inflicted was minimal, but Donkey Kong's size made it difficult to dodge all of them, and it wasn't long before the damage points began adding up to a decent amount. Sensing this evident danger, the giant ape leaped onto the nearby platform to avoid this, checking his damage counter once he was out of harm's way.

"Whoo, boy! He's already got me up to fourteen points of damage. I wanted him to give me a challenge, but that's just insane. Alright, I'm gonna have to turn the tables on him now before things get rough."

Seated in the overlooking balcony, Marth and Peach were engaged in a rather heated conversation regarding the odds of victory for each brawler, the latter defending Donkey Kong, while the former defended Diddy's skills.

"I understand how strong he is, but you must remember, Peach, that strength is only one of several factors to take into account here. Donkey Kong's abilities aren't exactly the most well-balanced of any brawler here. The same can be said for Diddy, but he's much more capable as a whole, the way I see it."

"I notice that, as well, but I still find Donkey Kong's strength and his experience to make up for his slight lacking in other areas."

"I think that the two of you are letting these arguments become too overheated."

They immediately placed their debate on halt and turned to face Zelda, whose gaze was directed towards the arena, though her attention was on them.

"I would assume it's safe to say that neither of you can truly guarantee that your party is more or less capable of succeeding. You might as well drop this conversation entirely and just enjoy the match. You wouldn't want to miss something spectacular now, would you?"

Hesitating for a moment, they eventually took the hint and turned their gazes back towards the match. And, with the first items making their appearances around the stadium, it couldn't have been at a better time.

"Aa aaah oo oo ooo!" ("Hold still, so I can whack you with this!")

"Ee ee ee ah oo ooo!" ("You're out of your mind, DK!")

Having gotten his hands on a Beam Sword, the larger of the two primates was now in pursuit of his smaller counterpart. Unfortunately, not only did Diddy's size make him faster, but also more agile, allowing him to cleverly avoid any swipes of the sword that Donkey Kong made. In truth, it was beginning to greatly annoy the latter.

"Ugghh, this is going nowhere,...unless..."

The moment the idea entered DK's mind, the great ape quickly stopped in his tracks, causing Diddy to do the same in curiosity. This is what he was counting on.

"Huh? Why did-"

"Oo aaahh!" ("Hey, what the world?!")

Rather than make another failed attempt to hit Diddy with the sword, Donkey Kong chucked it at him instead, inflicting just as much damage, if not more. But, before his opponent could reach for his popguns in retaliation, DK was already on top of him, his Beam Sword in hand once again. After a few minutes of continuous pummeling, Diddy finally managed to evade the assault, though his damage count had already risen to near-dangerous levels. Panting at this point, he looked around, hoping to find an item of his own to use against Donkey Kong. He was unsuccessful.

"Man, this isn't good. I gotta find something to use against him, cause the popguns aren't doing me any justice right now. C'mon, gimme something. …Bingo."

On the other end of the stadium, there appeared a small, red object, …a smart bomb. Having already formulated a plan to get to it before Donkey Kong, Diddy’s Rocketbarrels emerged from his backpack and began to charge, which prompted the larger of the apes to begin building up power in his left arm, should he require a more powerful attack to retaliate with.

"Just what are you planning, little buddy?"

He'd ultimately prove not too fond of his answer. Keeping his arm at the ready, he stood idly by as Diddy finished charging his Rocketbarrels to their maximum potential. However, rather than charge him as Donkey Kong anticipated, the smaller of the two used both his size and maneuverability to dart around his counterpart, catching the bomb and tossing it back as he flew over it. Caught completely by surprise, DK didn't even move to avoid it as it hit him square in the chest, exploding on impact. But, what made the smart bomb unique, as Fox and Falco would testify, was the process it underwent as it did. Rather than release all of its energy at once, the resulting blast continued to expand out from the point where it originally exploded, leaving Donkey Kong at its mercy for a full six seconds. As the explosion subsided, the great ape was tossed across the stage like a ragdoll, just barely managing to grab ahold of the stadium edge as his damage count soared past the eighty-point mark. As soon as he found the strength to pull himself back up, however, he felt something pressing his fingers harder towards the ground, looking up to see Diddy's foot on top of his hand and one of his Popguns in his hand. He honestly had difficulty holding back his laughter.

"…Oo oo o oo o o. Ook ah ah ooh o-o-o-o-o." ("…Hehehehe. Well, thanks for the show, Diddy.")

His young sidekick hesitated for a moment, but eventually proceeded to pry Donkey Kong's fingers loose.

"…Ooh ook…oo." ("…No problem, …big guy.")

And with that, the great ape gave up any attempts he had of returning to the stage, knowing full well that he didn't have the stamina to last much longer. The crowd realized this, as well, bursting into cheer as Donkey Kong fell past the Blast Line.

"Game! The winner is…Diddy Kong!"

Once the referee made this match's outcome official, almost everybody in the colliseum, brawler and audience member alike, stood to applaud the victor, letting Diddy know exactly what he had accomplished in that moment. He took a moment to let this feeling seep in. He could definitely get used to that.

Moments later, Donkey Kong was returned to the arena, enticing the crowd to increase the volume of their cheers. The two said nothing as they reunited and turned to leave, nor did they say anything as they walked across the bridge. As they made it past the halfway point, however, Diddy suddenly stopped and looked back at the stadium before turning to Donkey Kong. Knowing exactly what his young friend was thinking of doing, he smiled and nodded his head, prompted him to run back onto the stage and begin jumping around frantically. Watching from the bridge, DK simply chuckled and continued inside, letting Diddy enjoy this moment of pure happiness.

"You earned it, buddy."

I was expecting Donkey Kong to win this one but this what Diddy has been working for and he deserves this win.
Great chapter one of your best yet.

Yeah, I figured I'd either have this outcome or that Lucas would beat Ness to get that "underdog" feeling goin', y'know? Obviously, I chose this one:D And thanks, man:) I wasn't too sure about this one myself, but I'm glad you liked it:D
