Chapter 18 - Icons

Night had fallen over the Smash realm, as had universal anticipation for the final match of the day. Numerous spotlights have been activated throughout the colliseum to give the anxious members of the audience more than enough light to see it. Who could truly blame them for their excitement, though? The identities of the remaining brawlers almost guaranteed the magnificence of the match to come. Two of the original icons, champions and guardians of their respective homeworlds, colliding in a full-on battle of strength, wit, and luck was sure to be a grand spectacle. Within the colliseum walls, several of the untriumphant brawlers were making their way outside to join the crowd in watching the event from their designated seating area. It seemed nobody was going to miss this match for the world.

Inside, the two brawlers in question were making last-minute preparations for their bout. Link gathered up his assorted arsenal of weapons, checking twice to ensure that he forgot absolutely nothing, while Fox used his last few minutes to practice his marksmanship with Falco. Almost flawless as usual, his former co-pilot was beginning to have concerns about the necessity of this training.

"Alright, Fox! Ten outta ten. Now c'mon, wrap it up. I intend to get a good seat out there before Wario's gargantuan behind takes up all the empty seats."

Letting out a small snicker at this humorous statement, Fox turned down this offer.

"Well, go on ahead then. I need to keep going until my shots are perfect."

"What are you talking about!? You just got a perfect score!"

"Yes, but my previous score wasn't. I need to make sure I get it every time. Now, if you'll excuse me..."

Fox lifted his blaster to fire another round, but the motion in his arms was cut short as Falco rested his hand on top of them.

"No, you're coming with me."

"Falco, what do you think you're doing?"

"I was about to ask you the same thing, Fox."

Intrigued, Fox lowered his firearm and straightened his stance before listening on.

"You're taking this match far too seriously-"

"No, YOU'RE not taking it seriously enough! This is Link! I can't afford to do any less than perfect."

"You say that as if Link IS perfect."

"He's not perfect! I know that he isn't! So, what's stopping me from winning if I am!?"

"Why do you care whether or not you defeat him so much, anyways!?"

"Because I never have!"

Falco halted his reply for a moment to think about this statement. Once he was able to practically read Fox's current thoughts, he continued.

"So,...this is a personal affront, is it?"

Just as Falco had done, Fox stopped himself before he could reply. When he realized the authenticity of the answer to that question, he lowered his head slightly and closed his eyes.

"Fox, you were the one who told me during my first time here to never let a match become personal, ESPECIALLY if your opponent wasn't even from your own homeworld. A little ironic that I'm the one telling you that now, isn't it?"

After a moment's hesitation, Fox opened his eyes again, though he refused to lift his head up just yet.

"...I know. I'm sorry, Falco. He's been my rival here for years now and it's just...sorry."

Instantly feeling sympathy for his old friend, Falco put his hand around him and patted him on the back a few times.

"Hey, buddy. That's a tough code to live by, y'know. The fact that you were able to do it for almost...sixteen years is hard enough to believe."

Finding the courage to look his friend in the eye once again, Fox lifted his head and let a smile form on his face.

"Thanks, Falco."

"Hey, it's what I'm here for...well, that and to make fun of you when you lose."

They both got a good laugh out of this.

"No one's perfect here, Fox. That's the reason it's so unpredictable. Just do your best. You're good at that, at least."

Another laugh resulted from this. Before either of them could say something else, though, Peach's voice emerged throughout the corridors.

"The time is finally here. Two brawlers remain to fight for their place in the next round. And this just might be one of the best match-ups yet."

Back inside, Falco whimsically rolled his eyes as Fox lost any preparation time he thought he still had.

"Ah! See? Had you left with me when I told you, I could've been sitting out there in a good seat right now and you could've been...hey, Fox! Where are you goin'!?"

As he began to lecture Fox, the latter was already running out the door and on towards the arena.

"Now you're keeping ME up! Get going, slowpoke!"

"Arrgh! Fox, I'm gonna...ah, forget it."

Dropping his irritation entirely, Falco picked up his gun and put it away before heading off to the seating area for the defeated brawlers, hoping that the next brawler to join them would be Link.

Outside, Peach continued her address to the audience.

"We thank each of you dearly for your attendance here today and we hope that you all will return tomorrow to see the final eight brawlers face off for their place in the semi-finals. Now then, without further ado,...will Fox McCloud..."

She paused for a moment to allow the crowd to show their love for the veteran pilot before continuing.

"...and Link..."

She paused once more, the cheers seeming to have gotten louder as the green-clad hero's name rolled off her tongue.

"...please enter the arena!?"

Corresponding with her request, the two walked out adjacent to one another, while the screams of the crowd seemed to have doubled in volume. Looking beneath the balcony where sat the princesses, as well as Marth now, Fox noticed Falco sitting in the seat at the end of the front row, while he also noticed Wolf sitting on the opposite end of that same row. His expression almost completely changed as he looked from his oldest friend to his oldest rival. While Fox and Wolf shared a mutual respect for each other, even having joined forces at one point, they each had a small fragment of hatred towards the other at all times. Either one of two things could be going through Wolf's mind right now.

"Now, show everyone why you're my rival."

...or...

"Link, I'm looking to you to cream this fox in my stead."

Fox put it out of his mind for the time being. He had more important things to worry about than Wolf, after all.

Silence fell over the colliseum for the last time of the day as the referee hovered forward to start the match. In the balcony and the one beneath it, Zelda and Falco were giving silent prayers for their respective friends.

"Link,..."

"3,..."

"Fox,..."

"...2,..."

"...I know you can do it."

"...1,..."

"Now prove it to us all."

"...GO!"

Fox wasted no time and pulled out his blaster, firing multiple shots at Link, who wasted no time in pulling his shield over his arm and holding it between himself and the incoming fire. While holding off this neverending array of attacks, the swordsman slowly reached into a bag around his waist and pulled out a small, round object with what appeared to be a string attached to it. Fox's keen eyes quickly detected the bomb, though, and he landed a shot on it just as it left Link's hand, causing it to explode right beside its thrower. His shield prevent any major damage from taking place, but it was Fox's actions following this that would bring Link trouble in the near future. Using his Fox Illusion technique, the mercernary dashed past Link in the blink of an eye, not only damaging him in the process, but giving him access to his backside, which was completely defenseless. Numerous shots were fired before Link was to activate his shield and escape to higher ground.

Checking his damage counter, Link caught sight of the digits two and three before being forced below the platform by an advancing Fox. Intending to inflict some damage of his own, Link jumped back through it and enforced his Spin attack, dealing three strong blows to his opponent and knocking him off the platform in the process. Immediately following this, Link drew out his Clawshot and, before Fox could pick himself back up, used it to pull him in close enough to be slashed by his blade. In the midst of the severe pain, however, Fox managed to grab ahold of a small device attached to his belt and hold it in front of him, causing to it to project a large, blue hexagonal shield, which managed to reflect Link's attack onto himself, giving him the chance to build up power and heat in his body before releasing it at an angle coinciding with Link.

"Fire!"

Bursting into flames, the intense energy sent Fox skyrocketing directly into Link, sending the Hylian a short distance into the air before falling to the ground with a thud. Hoping to catch his breath for a moment, Link quickly jumped back up and retreated to the edge of the arena, while Fox decided that it would be in his best interests, as well.

"I'm doing great! I just gotta keep this up and I'm off to fight Ike come tomorrow."

In the overlooking balcony, the monarchs of Altea, Hyrule, and the Mushroom Kingdom were having their own discussion about the match in progress. Surprisingly, Zelda was the least conversive of the three, while Marth seemed to be fixated on Link's current situation.

"He certainly isn't living up to his hype right now, especially after his match the previous night. It makes you matter whether Fox is that strong or Link isn't in the proper state of mind."

"Well, it wouldn't be the first time he's lost. Everyone of us has to lose a match at some point. It simply wouldn't be fair if any one of us was invincible."

"...Indeed. Though, I doubt that his current standing will last for much longer."

"Oh? And why's that, Zelda?"

The elder of two princesses looked from the arena over to her younger counterpart.

"I have faith in Link. I believe he can win. I always do...and always have."

Marth looked away from her and refocused his gaze on the match before them, resting his elbow on the arm of his chair as he did.

"Regardless, Fox seems awfully determined to win this. That could certainly become a game changer later on."

The women on either side of him nodded their heads in agreement as they turned back over to watch the match continue.

Beneath them, Falco and Roy had just struck up their own conversation about the ongoing match.

"It looks like your friend's doing rather well so far. You think that'll keep up for long?"

Falco didn't look in his direction, but merely nodded his head as he watched the match proceed, sat in the same posture as Marth.

"Absolutely. Fox knows how to do his thing. He's done it many times before."

"Yeah, but this is Link! He's won this whole thing once before! Fox has gotten close, certainly, but he's never been able to do that. This is bound to turn around later on down the road. What makes you so certain?"

He thought about it for a second, arguing with himself over whether or not he should give the answer he had on his mind.

"Man, this is gonna sound sooo corny...ah, what the heck, he's my friend, for cryin' out loud!"

"It's cause I have faith that he can get the job done. He always has in the past...and this time's no different. I believe he can win this."

Nodding ever so slightly, Roy looked back at the stadium to continue watching the match, seeming to have a new world view on Fox's prowess, and it only got stronger as he witnessed him kick Link off the side of the arena. Fortunately, a well-timed mid-air jump and Spin Attack allowed him to return to the stage and fend off Fox simultaneously. With his damage count now at dangerous levels, Link would have to take it slow and time the rest of his attacks from now on perfectly, or risk being knocked past the Blast Line.

With the concept of timing on his mind, Link quickly thought of a brilliant strategy, putting his sword away for the time being and pulling out his Bow. Noticing this, Fox loosened his stance to become more agile in preparation for the quick movements he would likely be forced to make. Surely enough, Link wasted no time in sending out his first entourage of arrows, only two of which hit Fox. The physical laws of the Smash realm caused the arrows to disintegrate on contact, though the damage was in no way less painful. After a short while, Fox's movements were able to improve to the point of avoiding every arrow that came his way. But, it wasn't quite at the point Link was waiting for.

It wasn't until Fox attempted to catch an arrow in his hand that Link silently cried out in success. He waited until Fox pulled this stunt a few more times and was certain that his eyes never drifted in his direction before attaching a few bombs to his next group of arrows. As predicted, he took the bait. Upon catching onto Link's overall plan, Fox froze with fear before tossing the arrow as hard as he possibly could. This small dilemma was all it took, as Fox completely forgot about the remaining arrows as they each made contact, one by one. The mass effect sent him flying to the opposite edge of the stage, nearly exhausted by the excessive amount of damage he had just received.

Managing to stand for a second, only to drop to one knee, Fox looked at his damage counter, slowly closing his eyes and looking away when he spotted three digits.

"No...it's over. It's all over."

He managed to lift his head to find Link standing in front of him, as if he was waiting for him to notice him there. After a short moment of eye contact, Link looked at the referee and back at Fox, as if to get him to catch on. He did, and merely shook his head in response to the unasked question.

"No,...go ahead. I can barely...move my arms, anyways."

Hearing his unspoken declaration of defeat, Link breathed a heavy sigh of relief, letting Fox know that he was almost as exhausted he was, bringing a smile to Fox's face.

"Heh, guess I did alright, after all. Okay,...let's get this over with."

Doing as he pleased, Link hesitated for a moment before drawing his sword and sending an upward slash across Fox's chest, forcing him over the edge of the arena. The referee wasted no time in making this victory official.

"Game! The winner is...Link!"

The crowd erupted into cheer for both the victor and loser, equally pleased with both of their performances. In the stands below the overhead balcony, the onlooking brawlers gave applause for their peers, while Falco remained silent in his seat, obviously somewhat disappointed about the match's outcome. It wasn't until he felt a hand on his shoulder that he looked up from his chair, surprised to see that it belonged to Wolf.

"He did as well as he could. You should feel proud for him, nonetheless."

It seemed that Wolf's hatred for Fox was overshadowed by his respect, at least for today. Through some odd twist of fate, Falco found himself prompted to stand and applaud with the rest of them by the most unlikely of people...or wolves.

"Yeah, Fox. You did good alright. But, you're still gonna get it when we meet inside."

Out on the stadium, the two contestants were reunited once again. After a brief hesitation from Fox, the two shook hands, letting each other know that everything that coincided that night would be left out on the arena. As they journeyed back inside, they were joined by those brawlers who had watched their match. On the balcony, the three residing there stood up, but as Marth turned to head inside with the others, he looked back at the princesses, who were not yet following his example.

"Are you two coming?"

Peach looked back at him with a joyful smile and giggled before replying.

"Well, we can't leave without saying goodnight, can we?"

Marth smirked at this comment.

"Yes, I suppose not. Very well, I'll see you two inside."

As he left, Zelda stepped forward as the audience fell silent to hear her speak.

"And so ends the second day of the fourth Super Smash Tournament. I hope you all are greatly pleased with the results of this day's matches and we look forward to seeing you here again tomorrow at mid-day. Have a good night's sleep, everyone."

The crowd's cheers returned one last time as the colliseum began to clear out. After an exciting day of great victories and utter disappointments, the entire Smash realm was certainly ready for a long night's rest.

Good chapter man! I'm glad I was the first to post, I usually get in late.

This was a really good chapter in my opinion, because you managed to cover pretty much all of their moves, as well as having more dialogue from the side characters (the ones not in this fight I mean).

I don't know how you got this chapter out so quickly, especially with as few errors as there are.

I spotted a few but it was mostly just words that were left out, or mistaken for other words. For instance, "So,...this is a personal upfront, is it?" I think you might be searching for the word affront.

Not that those things are a big deal at all, just thought you might like to know.

I really enjoyed this chapter! Here is a +rep for you!

Huh, I never knew it was spelled that way. I always hear it as upfront, but thanks:)

And I appreciate that, man:) I dunno, I wasn't exactly on much of a roll. I just really wanted to finish it, I guessxd
