Chapter 1 - The Strongest Pokemon

The sun had risen, showing that a week had now passed since Peach and Zelda's announcement. The large stadium that was now bathed in sunlight had started filling with viewers for the first time in five years. By noon, the entire colliseum was flooded with fans of the Brawl, as the 32 contestants grew all the more anxious as they waited in their corridors for the announcement of the first match. Pikachu and Jigglypuff were no exception, nor was their Trainer.

"Whew. I'm pretty nervous, guys. How about you?"

The two pokemon responded with their names, as they were the only words they could use.

"Pika!" "Jigglypuff!"

Elsewhere, in the mess hall, the larger of the four Pokemon contestants were sitting down for a quick meal, as it could very well be the only time they'll get a chance to eat before they're called out onto the battlefield. They were joined by Captain Falcon and Solid Snake, the former of whom spoke first.

"Man, I could upchuck all this food at any point, as nervous as I am."

The mercenary beside him pushed his tray aside, finding himself unable to consume his own food.

"That's an awfully vivid picture. Much appreciated, Cap."

The bounty hunter threw his head back and let out an obviously exaggerated laugh, though it didn't stop Snake from chuckling a bit himself. He then turned towards the two Pokemon.

"How are you guys holding up? Worried? Nervous?"

Lucario nodded, while Mewtwo gave a different response.

"Not at all. I have full confidence in my abilities. No matter who I must fight today, I will succeed."

Admiring his confidence, Snake formed a smile and then proceeded to retrieve his tray, having felt his appetite return to him. The four then looked up from their food as they heard the outside cheers grow louder. Peach and Zelda must have appeared outside. Sure enough, the princesses of the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule had appeared on the balcony where their seats were located, preparing to speak to the crowd. Zelda spoke out first.

"I speak for Princess Peach, myself, and our contestants when I say that we're honored to be here after such a long time. We owe our gratitudes to you for giving us this special opportunity."

The crowd let out a roar of excitement as Peach began to speak.

"Today is the first of five days of non-stop action between some of the greatest warriors in the universe. In the end, one will become the fourth Super Smash Champion!"

The crowd grew ever louder at hearing Peach's words.

"It's time for the Brawl to begin. Are you ready?"

The crowd erupted into cheer as a large VS. appeared on the various screens around the stadium. Zelda spoke to the crowd.

"The first match of the Brawl will be between..."

Two figures then appeared on either side of the board. The first was small and yellow, while the other was grey and looked alien in appearance.

"...Pikachu and Mewtwo!"

The crowd roared in excitement as the announcement was made. Pikachu and his Trainer had the same feeling, though it wasn't to overshadow their nervousness.

"It's time. You ready, buddy?"

"Pika!"

The trainer smiled and motioned for Pikachu to jump on his shoulder. He then turned to his second Pokemon.

"We'll be back in a little while."

"Jigglypuff."

As they made their way through the corridors to the doors leading onto the stadium, they managed to bump into their opponent.

"Oh! Um, hello Mewtwo."

The other Pokemon seemed to bear it no thought and proceeded to his doorway. As they began doing the same, he spoke out to them.

"How does it feel?"

Somewhat thrown off, the two looked at each other before the Trainer responded.

"How does what feel?"

Mewtwo continued to walk away as he gave them an answer.

"Knowing that you're going to lose in the first round."

Both of them were obviously angered by this, but before they could respond, he had already vanished. They decided to throw the comment aside and continued toward their doorway. Upon their arrival, it began to slowly open, letting in the blinding sunlight. Upon fully opening, the Trainer walked through the doors, Pikachu still on his shoulder, and across the bridgeway between the corridors and the stadium. Mewtwo was on the other side of the colliseum following suit. Once they stepped foot on the stadium, Pikachu jumped to the floor as the two bridges connecting to the stadium retreated into the walls of the colliseum, leaving them stranded on the field of battle. The crowd's cheers soon turned to silence as the two brawlers settled into their positions, locking eyes and refusing to look away. The referee watching the field from his hoverboard then began the countdown.

"3, 2, 1, GO!"

Pikachu was the first to attack, sending out a barrage of Thunder Jolts in Mewtwo's direction. The larger Pokemon managed to easily Teleport away from the attacks and was now charging a Shadow Ball. Pikachu used a Quick Attack to force Mewtwo to throw the Shadow Ball before it could be charged further, using another Quick Attack to dodge it. The mouse Pokemon then proceeded to use Thunder Bolt, managing to land a direct hit on Mewtwo. As he plummeted to his knees, Pikachu's Trainer celebrated on the sidelines.

"Yes! Way to go, Pikachu!"

Unfortunately, as Pikachu turned around to finish his opponent off, he noticed all too late that he had now left himself vulnerable by the slightest distraction. Mewtwo took every advantage of this to use Confusion on his opponent, which was successful. With Pikachu now in a daze and slowly beginning to lose his footing, his Trainer had now begun to fear for his safety.

"Come on, buddy! Snap out of it! Hurry!"

While he could hear the voice of his Trainer, Pikachu's confused mind forced to look in the opposite direction, allowing him to be hit in the front by a large Shadow Ball.

"No! Pikachu!"

The smaller Pokemon fell to the ground, presumably unconscious, as his opponent levitated closer.

"You've managed to strike me once. I can say that without an uneasy heart. But, your overconfidence is ultimately going to lead to your defeat here. You never turn your back on a beast that is still at bay, and you were foolish to believe that you had a chance of defeating the strongest Pokemon in existence."

Those in the crowd who cheered for Mewtwo had filled the colliseum with their screams, though this wasn't enough to leave the boos from Pikachu's fans unheard. His Trainer certainly heard them.

"Pikachu, please! You gotta get up! You can still do this! You can still defeat him! Show him that he's not the strongest Pokemon!"

Mewtwo's stand on Pikachu's current state remained unchanged by this however, and as he turned to behold the crowd, the shock that hit him in the center of his back came with the greatest surprise.

"How!?"

Pikachu, though barely standing, had managed to bring the legendary Pokemon to his knees for the second time. The crowd had nearly exploded with joy as the cheers echoed throughout the colliseum. Mewtwo himself couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at this turn of events. This action managed to catch the attention of his opponent.

"How ironic. You've managed to switch our positions for a second time, and while I was making the same mistake that you did before. And it seems that this time, you've made sure to keep your eyes solely on me to prevent it from happening again. I've clearly underestimated you, Pikachu. I find some difficulty in saying it, but there is truth in that statement. Unfortunately, there was also truth in the statement that I made before our battle began."

Much to Pikachu's shock that he failed to noticed that Mewtwo had been slowly turning over as he spoke, the two Pokemon were now facing each other, giving the larger of the two the opportunity to Disable his opponent. Immediately, Pikachu felt extreme exhaustion and was in a daze yet again. This time, he was unable to hear his Trainer's pleas before he was hit with a Shadow Ball no bigger than the one that Mewtwo had been forced to use at the beginning of the match. The size did not matter however, as Pikachu found himself unable to keep on. He fell to the ground once again, this time, completely unconscious. After an ever so short moment of complete silence, the crowd burst into cheer for the victor. The referee lowered closer to the stadium to confirm the results.

"Game! The winner is...Mewtwo!"

The cheers grew louder as the Trainer made his way onto the field to pick up his Pokemon.

"You did great, Pikachu."

"Yes, he did."

The Trainer looked up to see Mewtwo standing in front of him. After looking at his fallen opponent for a moment, his eyes returned to his Trainer.

"When he wakes, inform him that I found honor in being his opponent. He has certainly earned my respect."

The boy nodded, and the two made their way down to the corridors, the victor to prepare for the next day's trials, and the loser to prepare his second Pokemon for her approaching battle.
