I struggled with where to put Mifune & Darui, they actually seem fairly matched to me.

Actually they are all pretty strong. The problem with the Manga is that people are Kiba and Akamari are made more powerful than Jounin from other Villages. For example, Kitsuchi (Son of Onoki) has to be the second strongest person in all of Iwagakure but since he isn't one of the main characters; we don't see much from him.

I struggled with where to put Mifune & Darui, they actually seem fairly matched to me.

I would have to say Gaara is the strongest.

Actually they are all pretty strong. The problem with the Manga is that people are Kiba and Akamari are made more powerful than Jounin from other Villages. The son of the Kage does not HAVE to be the strongest in fact if that were true the Kages reign would become a dynasty.
Hashirama's son and/or daughter was not the 2nd strongest (and we know he had a child since Tsunade is his Grand-daughter) Hiruzen's son must not have been too strong either seeing as the council went outside of Konoha to replace him.

Gaara has no knowledge on Kamui.

For all he knows Kakashi is a melee soldier.

He gets his head warped off.

The rest are fodder in comparison.

I'm not saying he isn't strong but he doesn't HAVE to be the 2nd strongest in that village just because he is the Kages son. If he happens to be the 2nd strongest, than happy coincidences, but you made it sound that simply being the kages son means he'd be the 2nd strongest.
