Just like any other video game, city guards tend to have a select few lines that they say if you interact with them. It just so happens that "I used to be an adventurer like you...then I took an arrow to the knee" line was super obvious.

The typical "formula" for the line is to compare yourself to someone else (usually a good accomplishment or achievement) and then saying that you stopped due to your knee injury, even if its irrelevant (since its a meme). In a way, its a different version of "cool story, bro"
