Stop CISPA
The House has just passed the bill called Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA).
The bill has more than 100 sponsors in Congress, with support from Democrats and Republicans alike. Outside of Congress, CISPA has the support of more than 800 companies--if you count trade groups like the Business Software Alliance and CTIA. Individual sponsors include AT&T, Facebook, Intel, Microsoft, and Verizon.
Bigger list of main-stream supporters include:
AT&T
Boeing
BSA
Business Roundtable
CSC
COMPTEL
CTIA - The Wireless Association
Cyber, Space & Intelligence Association
Edison Electric
EMC
Exelon
Facebook
The Financial Services Roundtable
IBM
Independent Telephone & Telecommunications Alliance
Information Technology Industry Council
Intel
Internet Security Alliance
Lockheed Martin
Microsoft
National Cable & Telecommunications Association
NDIA
Oracle
Symantec
TechAmerica
US Chamber of Commerce
US Telecom - The Broadband Association
Verizon
So what does this bill do exactly? In a nutshell, this bill gives the governement the authorization to take, share, and shut-down anything and everything on the internet in the name of "cyber protection". They can check your e-mails, pictures, videos, messages, and the list goes on and on. If there's a video on youtube that is anti-government, it will be shut-down. If your girlfriend sends you a picture, they will see it. If you are planning to start a rally/protest via internet, they will take the information and have authorities there to stop you before you even arrive. This is complete control and disregard for humanity in general as it is the internet, not just the U.S If this bill passes the internet will never be the same again. Now you can read between the lines of the bill, and try to disect all of the big words to try and make some good of it, but the fact is that this is an invasion of privacy, and completely illegal. They are basically treating us like criminals, innocent until proven guilty is out of the window and they can now search you without consent via internet. I know I'm using some rather exaggerated examples, but this is the reality of it. The government wants to rule the internet, and we cannot allow it to happen.
What can we do? First off, if you're not in the U.S you're virtually out of the loop, but you can still spread the word which in itself is still extremely helpful. Since this bill has already passed the House We have to bombard the state senators with calls and e-mails/letters opposing this bill, we have to let our voice be heard. We also have to sign the petition. In the following two links you can find out who is your current senator (class 1), and it also provides the phone numbers. This also provides their twitter accounts and official sites which includes information such as office locations, and e-mail accounts. The other link is to the petition. If you love the internet and freedom, get off your ass and do something. This bill is SOPA on steroids. If NB did it before, we need to do it again. I ask that we please black out parts of the banner, and post anti-CISPA links with information on how to stop this bill from passing.
