No. Everyone has a tie in that sense, yet not everyone is African. If I can't trace anyone I've ever met in my family back to Africa, I have no desire to call that place my origin. I'm an American, simple as that. I just happen to be half black as well.
And uhh, I'm in evolutionary psych at the moment, much better than some history bs course.

I said the family I've met. None of them are personally from Africa, so why should we call ourselves Africans? We identify with our country, our ethnicity is no doubt important, but that isn't the first thing I want someone to think of. I'll say it again, I'm an American, simple as that.
You're speaking as if I'm not aware that I have family that came from Africa, on the contrary, like o said that goes without saying. But that connection goes back farther than anyone in my family can identify, so why bother?

He was just being sarcastic for the sake of arguing. He was basically trying to put you down to sound like some kind of smart guy. He should have at least thought this through. Now he's probably scratching his head trying to think of an explanation for arguing with you in the first place.
